Any bodybuilding bassists on tb?

Sign in to disble this ad
Five months ago I started working out because I wanted to get in better shape and in better health. Anyway, does anyone else on here get their swole on?

I figured we could trade advice on supplementation, workout routines, the best tasting protein powders, etc. etc.

I started lifting after my chiropractor suggested a specific exercise to strengthen my back for a problem I was having.

I lift 3-5 days a week for 45 - 60 minutes.

I supplement with a multivitamin, fish oil, protein powder, creatine and a NO booster.

I love bodybuilding.com. Great all in one resource.

Right now I'm working out every other day, roughly 45 minutes. I pretty much do upper body stuff because I have massive calves that are already striated. I need to start hitting up my quads and glutes, though.

I'm going to start doing cardio on off days. I'm sitting at roughly 20-25% body fat and cardio is really the best way to lose that belly.

I supplement with a multi, fish oils, protein shakes(skim milk, egg whites, powder), Joint Soother(MSM, Glucosamine, Chondroitin).

I got my bench up to 190 lbs. for workout weight today. I couldn't complete the last 2 reps of my set for fear of cratering my skull. It should be no prob in a few weeks though. I had to tell someone, I'm proud that I'm advancing in my workouts.

Yeah, I used to work out. Might start again when my schedule gets a little more free.

I exercise regularly, but I don't "body build". I rarely lift weights, pretty much all cardio. I'm also a vegetarian. Your diet is much more important than how much weight you can lift. imo...

I've known too many bodybuilders who have done permanent damage to their bodies. Not to mention a serious hit on their personal lives too! When it becomes about how big and ripped you can get and moves past actual health, it becomes a disorder similar to anorexia. When I was younger, I worked out to get big, now I'm older, I'm trying to get smaller!

If you can strike a balance between appearance and health, it's good, but some folks go too far.

Yeah, I used to bodybuild. Now, I play alot of men's league soccer. I used to have a really hard time buiding mass. I joined the Army and I don't know what they fed us but we all got big. I gained 20lbs of muscle in 2 months in the Army. Now I have a harder time making sure I don't keep gaining weight (fat) so I do alot more cardio and soccer.

+1 on the vegetarian comment! They say your fitness is 80% diet 20% exercise. I'm not a vegan but I try to eat mostly vegetarian and avoid refined sugar and refined flour.

Good to see some musicians that are into fitness too. The skinny, heroin junky stereotype is still alive and kicking out there.

I`m not a body builder, but I do lift and hit the gym 4-5 times a week.

If you want to get big and ripped, the secret is 100% in your diet. Cut out sugars, lots of salt, simple carbs, and (bad) fatty foods. Also, with the way the average American diet is, you probably could see benefits from eating a little less as well.

Other tips. Eat 5-6 small means a day instead of 2 or 3 big ones. Be sure each meal is giving you protein(chicken breast is great for this).

It`s also good to set up meals and have veggies first(this will fill you up the most with the least fat), followed by some whole-grain carbs, followed by your low fat protein selection(doesn`t always have to be meat, mind you), and finish it off with a small thing of fruit.

When it comes to working out, it`s very important to change up your routine. Muscles adapt quick and a single workout exercise will become too easy too fast. Also remember that body building isn`t all about heavy weights and low reps. Do some medium weights with more reps to help tone.

And perhaps most importantly of all - 20 minutes of cardio everyday no matter what.

I've trained with weights since I was 17 (I'm 46 now) at a starting bodyweight of 135 lbs (6'). It took a lot of eating and intelligent training to get to 200 lbs, but then I fell in love with road bike racing and riding with clubs and other folks (Triathletes, etc). In order to do better at riding I decided to trim down a bit over the past few years which improved my climbing considerably..

Fitness has always been a priority (diet too). A few years ago I built up a fully equipped home gym with a spinning bike so I could train and ride all winter. I still train with weights during the riding season but only for upper body, my legs get enough work with 3-4 hour bike rides a few times a week.

I also cook all my own food and take it with me wherever I go. Diet is at least 60% of the battle, along with proper recovery (sleep, naps, low stress), and a balanced weight routine with cardio.

The biggest mistake guys make is totally over doing it in the gym, with little time for recovery and proper nutrition. The body can only take so much, so going in small steps is the only way to do it successfully year after year. You can actually train far less with less weight and get better results, you just have to train smart and plan properly.

i find that for me, cardio is most effective immediately following the weights(and after my recovery shake of course)....

it's absolutely true that one's diet is THE most important factor of all...but it's not only what you eat, it's when you eat.

All good points IMO.Gym junkie here.also a veghed haha

It's,to me, a matter of the fact the healthy body and mind contribute to good ablity and creative playing and songwriting.I ussually rally the gym, grab a bite/shake,then hit the bass for a good session. Some of ther most amazing songs, etc come from those sessions, for me anyway...

Also I like to prove the misguided people that think put such high priority on image. In that healthy is cool and sh*t too.Alot of tha bands we play with, drink alot and do other shYte,but I could care less.I litterally was doing push-ups back stage last show?Crazy??...prolly hah

Anything to contribute to your creativity and playability,is what I shoot for.Anything to help rock the joint!!

Hoooowa!!

That guy is a beast. He's got loads of excellent advice on his site, too. All straight up, no rubbish.

I spent a lot of time at the gym and doing cardio outdoors. I love it. I spent 5 years with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Three and half of those years I was too sick to do anything (ie. leave the house for more than an hour). There was no way I could work out. Now, I'm completely healed and hitting the gym 3-5 times a week (for 45mins to an hour each time), running 1 - 2 times a week (usually 5kms at a time), and I'm playing basketball again! It's fantastic and I can't see myself ever giving those things up.

I work out in the gym mainly to increase muscle mass, but I wouldn't call myself a body builder. I have the type of body that metabolises things really quickly so it's pretty hard for me to put on weight (muscle or fat). I'm slowly getting bigger though. It's been 12 months of hard work and disciplined eating but it's starting to show. My body fat percentage has dropped and my muscle mass has increased a bit. It's noticeable to people who haven't seen me for a while. I guess that's good! I eat a lot of protein (between 150-200 grams a day) in 5 meals. I don't eat much fat or simple carbs. Right now I'm about 6'4" and 85kgs (185 pounds). Slowly getting there! I don't want to be the hulk, but I'd like to get up to around 95kgs eventually, and keep my body fat percentage where it is now, or even lower. According to the online calculations that's about 10.5-11% at the moment.

I also work out/lift weights. But as far as supplementation goes, only for my general health, ie: Vitamin D, Niacin, Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin C, L Glutamine, Biotin, Omega 3, Vitamin A and I drink Mona Vie.

I also do not follow the current dietary mainstream. I am very low carb and adjust my protein as needed and all comes from as natural as possible sources. Not quite as natural as raw chicken, but you get the idea....whole foods and I drink water as my primary beverage.

My goal is to be fit, build endurance (kayaking, swimming, cycling and mountain biking) and have some definition. I am not going to be competing on a body building stage anytime soon....
