Any delivery drivers out there?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got offered a summer job delivering food for a greek place near me. I've never had a delivery job before but I have heard mixed things from friends.

Realistically I want the job and I would make better money than I am with my current job, though my hours would not be as good. I am also a little worried about the wear and tear on my car from doing deliveries.

Anyone with experience or input?

Yeah, thats normally how its done in the states with pizza places and other restaurants that deliver. Normally if its a catering company or something they have their own van.

I delivered for a restaurant that did both hot food and catering for 3.5 years and it will beat up your car quite a bit, not too mention make it smell like food 24/7. Gas expense is also a b*tch, but I did make great money doing it. Hourly wage, plus a $1.25 per delivery and of course tips here and there. Luckily it was in a rich part of town so more often then not the tips were pretty good. If you think about it, you get paid to drive in your car and listen to music all day.

I was a delivery boy for my mom's company, delivering office products (Paper, pens, pencils, more paper, toner cartridges, anything else found in an office). I would run to the other side of Las Vegas (North Las Vegas) and make deliveries. The only bad part I ever ran into was on Nellis Air force base.

First was this : If you have a truck that is one a full one ton or higher they have to search it. I had about 20 boxes of paper, each weighing somewhere in the relm of 40-50 lbs apiece, and I was alone. Thankfully they did not have to search my truck, when I went inside to get the pass, the guy just goes, "Okay, make sure you go in her lane, she will let you through, the other guy, no such luck."

Second thing that sucked: Nellis doesn't have building numbers that are easily visible, AND this place was in an office building that I couldn't find. All I knew was that it was on the main road, and my iPhone would not find the place for me. Really sucked. Ended up calling the customer and had her go outside to flag me down after driving up and down it for half an hour. Terrible day.

Otherwise I had a good time. I got reamed out by the warhouse manager for getting lost, but it was Okay. Overall a good time.

I delivered for six months, my car broke down twice, I made less than minimum wage, and basically felt like I was used.

Paying for gas and the wear and tear on your car aren't going to be worth it. That comes from experience. Tips and gas will cancel out and you'll only make what you get paid. Not to mention the high potential for accidents, and even if they tell you that you aren't taking the deliveries fast enough, you are responsible for all traffic tickets.

YMMV.
