Any Dentists in the House?

Need a little bit of unprofessional advice.

I was uh... not wearing a mouthpiece during some Muay Thai training. Anyone familiar with MT, we were during clinch training and creating openings for knees. Well, we were holding pads at the chest level and throwing knees at the pad.

Fairly new guy decides to miss the pad and hit my face. Displacing my tooth.

The tooth is uh, back in place. It wasn't knocked out, just a little loose. I pushed it in place and have been holding it tight in place off and on for about an hour now with gauze. Rinsed out my mouth repeatably with water.

Unfortuantly, no 24/7 dentist in the area. I'm going first thing in the morning. Is there anything else I can do before this to ensure that my tooth doesn't like die? Is milk good? I popped a tylenol w/ codeine pill so I should be drowsy soon.

I'm not a dentist, but I've trained Muay Thai... I can handle google pretty well. Take my advice with a grain of salt

Looks like you might need a "splint" procedure if it is bad. Milk appears on all the pages, so I think milk would be ok. Looks like you want to push it in place and bite down on gauze.

I can't stress enough that I am not a dentist though... personally, I would make some calls to 24hr health places and see if they have some numbers. While you are at your dentist I'd recommend getting his number for emergencies in the future, I doubt s/he would mind. I have my dentists cell #, fortunately I've never had to use it.

Don't blame the new guy. Assuming you are an experienced thai fighter you should have reacted to the wild knee, you know how the boxing referees always say protect yourself at all times?. Unless he really reefed on your neck and you were bent over at 90 degrees, which also shouldn't have happened I can't see how he got you in the face haha. But accidents happens.

I'd also recommend getting a high quality fitted mouth guard, you might be more comfortable wearing it while training then, just be sure to clean it after every use. When I was a new fighter the steel can and the fitted mouth guard were my best investments aside from my gloves.

Nearly every dentist will have an answering service- make a few calls and you'll get a call back.

My dad was a dentist and was always taking calls in the middle of the night- it's part of the job.

No luck so far on the 24/7 dentist. I will just have to cross my fingers and hope for the best in the morning.

I felt like the hugest idiot when this happened. Ugh. I always wear my mouthguard for training because it helps me prepare for actual sparring. Well I happened to leave it at my house and was running late to meet my friend who was going to try out MT for the first time.

Long story short... ugh. I'm not experienced any pain with the tooth. I hope this is a good sign. I go on tour starting uh... Friday.

Try calling the ER as well... I don't know about the US, but lots of our hospitals up here have a dentist or dental residents that are at least on call. Might be worth looking into if you aren't going to hit up the ER otherwise.

You should feel like and idiot for saying 'repeatably' in your first post!

You did the right thing by pushing the tooth back in the socket and leaving it there. Get to a dentist ASAP to let him/her check it out. I haven't been in the dental field in over 16 years so I'm not sure if there are any new methods for dealing with a tooth that's been knocked out.

Edit: I just reread your post and you said it was knocked loose. That's better than being knocked out. You probably just tore some periodontal ligaments and you'll have to take it easy on your eating until those heal. No biting into apples and such. You'll probably have to cut your food up for a while until it heals. Still, see your dentist first thing this morning.

Went to the dentist this morning. No root damage visible on xray and he doesn't think there is any bone damage. He just said to take it easy and baby it for a week or two and then come back in for a check-up.

Hi, I do mauy thai too! I'm not a dentist, but I'm surprised you were allowed to train in that situation without protection. I never even train without a cup and mouthpiece, I seem to get kicked in the groin about once per session!
