I was a Euphonium major in college. I had a Silver Besson 4 valve. I actually still have a cd of our Wind Ensemble with a few of my Euphonium solos in the Lord of the Rings suite.

I gave it up for Bass full time due to absolutely no gigs available..........

i have to hear one played poorly every monday and wednesday

the baritone is also between the tuba and trombones but its kind of a the bastard of the brass section with its missing valve and awkward size and all

wow... um, I wanted to post in this thread, but it feels like middle school....

ANYWAY..

I can play, although I am a trumpet player. As a music ed major, though, I can play most everything. Euphonium is deff one of my better doubles. And I got to play it in tuba christmas a couple years back.

What's with the fourth valve on that one? It got lost or something? It wandered off and nearly landed on another horn? All my four valve horns had the fourth as a pinky valve right next to the others.

And I played all the brass except the French Horn. I started on cornet and every year they handed me a larger horn. It's a plot. If you're a guy with any size and play brass, they want you trapped under a Sousaphone come marching band time.

It's called a compensating valve. Having the valve in this position makes it easier to play in tune and you can get a nice low B natural.

I have played both and this setup is much nicer.
