Any fighters on TB?

Hi all,

So, a while ago i decided i was going to join a MMA club!

I dont really know why i did it, martial arts are something i always found fascinating as a kid but for some reason i never actually took the plunge and got into it!

It took me some time to get mentally prepared but i finally got started a few months ago and guess what?

I LOVE IT!

I have been training 3 to 4 times a week in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai and to be honest i really regret not getting into it earlier in life...

That might seem a bit strange to most people as music and fighting a two things as far apart as you could think off but in many ways they are both artistic and both take a huge amount of dedication and discipline!

I will admit that they are hard to combine! My hands feel so rough after a training session that i can barely play and i do feel like it does hurt my playing ability a bit and causing a lot of finger/hand/body soreness but i enjoy it so much that i think im ready to make the concession on my playing!

I think i didnt enjoy something as much since i started playing bass 9 years ago!

So all that got me thinking, are there many fighters or martial arts practitioners here on Tbass and how do you deal with every day injuries from training and playing?

Cheers

I was just joking. Lots of internet tough guys bickering on those threads. It really didn't have anything to do with your post, but here's a link that the first post links to the others.

The Church of Dan Atkinson / The Wood Doesn't Matter Club

My advice is to stay away if you've already been spared.

Personally, I'm a lover not a fighter.

Now that i read your answer again it does make sens!
I do try hard to avoid these threads....

Believe it or not i am also a lover! I managed to spend the first 26 years of my life pretty much fight free! I am not an aggressive guy and i hate free/useless violence!

Can i just add that i really have no interest in tales of street fights and random punchups!

Lets limit this to sport and ring fighters not wannabe tough guys!

I (6'5" and 350) got in the ring once to show a buddy of mine (5'9" 200) who took up MMA how much I could still kick his butt without any special MMA training. In about 30 seconds I was on the floor with a bloody nose.

I know what you mean!
Im in pretty good shape myself, been weightlifting for years, rowing, generally pretty athletic and physical but i quickly realized that means NOTHING once you spare against trained people!

Training is everything!!!
You would be surprised how many "tough guys" would get their ass kicked by people half they weight and size who know what they are doing!

I used to box quite a bit when I was younger, my cousin was a boxer we fought each other regularly, nothing personal.

I've a few friends whom still train quite a bit, I don't like getting smacked much any more though, I leave them to it.

I surprised a friend of mine who had a black belt in Kung Fu by out grappling him. My only training is a bit of wrestling in high school and watching Gracie University videos. He is 6'3" 250lb and I am 5'9"ish and 160lb.

this. I don't get the chance to get into many scuffles. My size is a deterrent.

I will admit that I got lucky because he took me down and he fell into full guard and I quickly put him into a leg triangle choke to tap him out. He had a really hard time getting past my sprawl, even with his huge size advantage. I have routinely tapped out people much bigger than myself, but they don't ever really seem to know what they are doing. I really want to start taking BJJ and I am starting Muai Thai in a few weeks.

As for that fight, Jason probably could have choked out Royce if he knew what he was doing with that Guillotine.

I trained in combined martial arts for about 5 years but had to quit because of injuries. This was not MMA for competition but was a combination of various martial arts designed to be used in self defense in serious street fighting situations. We also did a lot of cardio conditioning on our own.

I really do miss it an hope to go back to it in the next year or two. I was starting to get into really great condition and it even helped me when playing gigs because my stage stamina was never ending - I had tons more energy than the guys in my band who were 10-15 years younger.

One thing I was always afraid of though, was breaking my fingers or hand while sparring and losing bass playing ability.

No, but when I did dream of being a ninja after watching Chuck Norris movies. I kind of still do.

I was going to answer but since I'm not a guy.....

I do Taekwondo in a combat-oriented training place, injuries happen, usually to legs and the torso so not really an issue with regards to playing the bass. The only thing that really makes it difficult is if we're breaking boards with knife hand strikes. It makes my pinky fingers, the side of my palm hurt so much I can barely pick anything up, let alone place any pressure on my pinky. Ergo, awkward fretting hand placement. That problem should disappear with practice, need to break things more

I disagree 100%. I think they're nearly identical in many, many respects. I think the longer you're in it, you'll begin to feel the same way.
