Any Fire Fighters on the boards?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm meeting with the Battalion Chief of my local fire department this Sunday because I honestly think this may be something I'm interested in. I'm not out for glory, and while driving a big red truck and spraying things with a hose sounds awesome, those aren't my reasons for wanting to look into the field of fire safety and prevention. I know that it's a lot of hard work and is an all around demanding job. I'm curious if there are any fire fighters on here, and if they could share some wisdom and tips, it would be much appreciated.

When faced with fires while cooking, use baking soda to smother the Oxygen and stop the flames. Or use sand if ya got a sandbox in your kitchen.

Not a firefighter, (I'm an EMT), but I work alongside firefighters often and some of my close friends are FFs. I'd consider volunteering with a vollie department first before plunging into it as a career; it's definitely not for everyone. You need to be very physically as well as mentally fit. Like with EMS, call volume will vary depending on where you're stationed, time of day, etc. Most paid FDs I know of work 24 on/24 off/24 on/3-5 days off shifts. You may also consider getting your EMT-B certification as many FDs also run EMS in a lot of cities.

Yep, I'm thinking about volunteering as well once I'm out of school.
