Any gardeners here?

Well, my mom always complains about how the plants we plant in the spring don't grow... We planted watermelons two years ago, tomatoes and peas last year (the peas grew pretty well). Can anyone offer some insights on gardening? Any specific type of soil or growth aids (especially for the watermelons)? Anything to protect bugs (birds, and squirrels) from eating them?

Summit NJ is USDA zone 6, I believe. You should not plant vegetables until May 1st -10th at the earliest. Usually sun, water and composted manure will result in good gardens. Growing melons in North Jersey is optimistic unless you have a LOT of sun. Marigolds planted near the vegetables help keep pests away without pesticides. Nothing tastes better than produce from your own garden.

We usually plant in late May - early June. Would you recommend any specific type of growth aid or anything of that sort ?

I like gardening with a twelve pack of coors light. Does that help you any?
