Any good Ipod transmitter for a car radio?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a stock radio in my SUV, and I'd like to get some sort of adapter for my Ipod. Ar ethe cassette adapters any good quality, or am I best off getting a FM transmitter? Which ones sound really clear? I understand that I get what I pay for, so I do not have a problem with spending something extra for a good one.

Thanks

Been there done that.

If you are in a city I would not go with an FM transmitter. I didn't have much luck with the Griffin in Boston, so I wound up with a Sony and then a Monster cassette adapter because after a year or so I found they wear out. IMHO you are better off getting a cheap Sony stereo with an auxiliary in.

If you have a tape player, use a tape adapter. If not, the FM transmitter may do the trick, but they always have some interference unless you're in the middle of nowhere.

Loved my Sony cassette adaptor. The Phillips one that I replaced it with wasn't bad. The Belkin FM transmitters suck. I believe they make one that ties into the antenna cable...might be a good option.

The tape adapter will work better. I've never been in a car where the FM transmitter sounded good/worked.

Another +1 to the tape adapter here, but some cars that were made after the tape deck was phased out and before the Aux cord was phased in only have a CD deck, which reduces the effectiveness of a tape adapter to 0.

In my experience, FM transmitters suck.

For my SUV (Chevy Suburban), I found an interface device that
connected between the cassette player and the radio head unit.
It allows me to tap directly in to the audio connection. My stereo thinks
I'm playing the cassette player when I'm actually using my iPod.
The sound is perfect and there is no noise or interference that you
get with the FM transmitter.
See this:

In this particular case, the device actually has two inputs so I could
also tie a DVD player into my car stereo.

Another place to look is here. I tried one of these but it had some
alternator whine in the signal:

FM transmitters are terrible. All the high-end will sound like total crap and you'll hear some distortion.

Avoid at all cost if you can.

FWIW, I used to have a Kensington FM transmitter that worked well. I think my brother lost it

I went hrough all of this with my wife's car. Tape adapters, FM transmitters, and the like. After wasting quite a bit of money, I came to the realization that good in-dash decks with iPod connectors are so cheap these days there is no reason to fool with all this other stuff. Just go buy a new deck.
