Just wondering if anyone here is a home brewer or distills their own alcohol here. Im about to cook up a batch of Lithuanian honey liquor called Krupnikas at the end of this month. Its neither distilling or home brewing, more like adding a bunch of stuff to grain alcohol. Cant wait, grandpa would be proud to see his recipe being passed down and carried out.

I've wanted to make my own bourbon for a few years now, but can't find decent instructions or a whiskey distillery local enough for me to apprentice.

No still yet, but now that we have moved to our own house I have a whole room in the basement (with a fridge for lagering) that will be dedicated to brewing. Woohoo!

I brew. I'll be resuming it shortly when it gets cold and I can keep my house at 68-70, which is ideal for the ale yeasts I use.

I brew...we should start one of those silly TB clubs, btw.

Stuff I've brewed:

Prickly pear cactus fruit mead (honey wine flavored with prickly pear cactus fruit)

Jamaican Blue Mead (blueberry cinnamon honey beverage that is light and finishes dry)

Hoegardden clone (finishing in bottles now)
Apple Pie Beer (also in bottles)
Double Ale (came out amazing)
Honey Amber (a little over carbonated but delicious)
Apple Raspberry Wheat (a little sour from the apple, but enjoyable)

Next up is a lager on the balcony (taking advantage of natures own kegerator) and an IPA in the house, as well as a batch of cizer (mead/cider)

What's the legality of building a home distillery? Is that a state by state thing?

It probably is state by state but im sure most allow it as long as you are producing under X ammount of booze, and its for personal consumption and not sales. Really dangerous operating a still though, even what im going to be doing is dangerous. Those vapors can ignite fast if you dont have proper ventilation and such.

Home distilling is currently illegal in the U.S. by Federal law.

Here is the current status from the Library of Congress on the House Bill that would make home distilling legal.

Tried home brewing; gave it up as bad job about 10 years ago. My ex-girlfriend that I shared a home with at the time had a few cats in the house so I had to content myself with brewing Belgian farmhouse type ales given the possibility of contamination. Some of them were OK, and one of the batches was really good, but I'd rather leave it to the pros I think.
