Any old Martial Arts warriors??

Sign in to disble this ad
in my 20s i was pretty hardcore judo, got my brown belt but never quite made it to black, i think i dropped it cause i had to do to many tournaments and i was always up against blackbelts which ment i had to cop alot of injuries. i was also getting free lessons and i think the instructor wanted be to take over the club when i got to black so i nicked off...lol

i also dabbled in kung fu and shotokan karate, did some weapons training also. Got good at spinning a stick around my head..lol

never had to fight anyone but i could take on 2 of my mates at the same time out the back at parties

There are a few of us here. Done Shotokan and Chinese 5 animal and about a year of BJJ, but most of my time for the past 10 years has been in Eskrima.
I have come to love the Filipino arts.

I did Shito-Ryu Kai for about 7 years when i was a growing up.. 3rd level brown, but didn't make it to black. I picked up the bass around 13 and that became my spiritual weapon of choice!

yes, i was 7 when i started shito-ryu.. many many moons ago

It actually has helped me more than once knowing this stuff. i may not practice it, but some things you just never forget.

I was just noticing the "Groovin' Eskrimador" line yesterday and reading your post just now said to myself, "Yep, eskrima"!

Maybe not.

I went to high school with a guy who was a judo monster. He was training like crazy while being groomed for the US olympic team, then one day he ruined his knee in a practice match.

As a youth on through age 19 I competed in full contact. Principally I was an Akido disciple, however I did also train in Kempo, specifically Hungar Kung Fu.

You don't see many Akidokas doing full contact - at least not since O-Sensei.
Not many internal stylists at all - Peter Ralston is the counterexample who comes to mind. I've always wanted to see his system, but not enough to commute up to Oakland.

Been studying BJJ and Shaolin Kempo twice a week for a little over 18 months now with my wife and son, and we love it! One of our friends jokingly calls Tuesdays and Thursdays "family fight night". I'm really too old for this, but ya gotta have yer fun while you can. They even posterized papa bear and cub about 9 months ago, which is pretty funny.

If you think you're too old for the Shaolin Kempo, try "Wing chun". It's much more static and based on avoiding useless movement.

I did taekwondo as a teen 25 years ago. I was pretty good and enjoyed breaking stuff and flying my legs in the air. Now I'm just a fatass who doesn't exercice enough. I'd be challenged to lift my feet higher than my chest.

Let's see. As a young kid I was taking Shotokan Karate (kaa-rah-tay not ka-rah-dee ) from about age 7 or 8-ish, til I was about 16. I tested (unsucessfully) for my Sho-dan once or twice.

As well, I also took Kendo for a short while. My grandfather was one of the founding instructors who brought Kendo from Japan to Canada (Steveston, BC and then to Manitoba). Last night was the 100yr anniversary of Kendo in Manitoba. I was one of 4 special guests honouring the founding instructors. Sadly only one of the original instructors is still alive and well. The other three were just the families of the original Sensei. Anyways, I think I would like to get back into Kendo soon....providing I can still fit my gear lol. It would probably be good for my high cholesterol and shedding off some extra baggage

Actually, the Kempo is fine so far, and I'm 15 pounds lighter than when I started because of it. It's the BJJ - which I love - that keeps me equipped with various injuries that make me wonder if I might be too old for it, or at least too old to be a beginner. There's only two BJJ guys in the academy older than I am, and both are advanced ranks who have been doing it for 10+ years and know how to flow and protect themselves better. My wife is having better luck since she only trains with women who are more interested in learning slowly and gently than being competitive.

Just out of curiosity for any other old farts out there (I'm 47), which arts have you found to be the most "old-fart/family friendly"? I did 4-5 years of Aikido in my 20's and it was perfect for me, but there's no place around here that has kids classes as part of it, and that's a big (perhaps the biggest) reason we're doing this; we want a good, positive, productive family activity to do together that will help prepare the little guy for some of the stuff that life can throw at you. Discipline and self defense will always be useful, especially with the state of the school system these days.

I did 8 years of competitive judo. It killed my knees, brutal sport.
I really loved it, maybe I'm gonna look up bjj.

I'm a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I also obtained Level 3 in Kali training. Haven't practiced in eight years, though.

Absolute truth to that. The Hung Gar complimented the flowing style well with the close combat grabs and pulls along with low, fast leg work. In truth I went into it because my best friend who was a student at the Kenpo achademy was I certainly looked different out there but it was a huge amount of fun and gave a young, shy kid a ton of confidence.

O-Sensei was amazing. The person who trained me and my younger brother was actually a disciple. He, however also took liberty and went slightly askew with a more focused aproach on Qi ( this is not to be confused with chi or ki ). Terry Dobson was a huge influence and his writings are simply amazing. It's sad he passed on so young.

Failed attempt at the Japanese pronunciation. English pronunciation is correct for English, but Japanese pronunciation is with a soft 'e' at the end, not long 'a'.
The first two syllables aren't extended like that either. (ka-ra-teh). 空手

Annoying I know, but I've been listening to people try to school others on the proper pronunciation of this word for years, and always wrong on it.

I'm 50. I was doing BJJ in my mid-40's, and it was too much for my joints, though it was a great workout and fosters a great combative mindset. I don't regret it a bit - and even got to train with GM Helio Gracie.

Honestly, I find Eskrima and other FMA's to be excellent as I age (unless you go Dog Brothers type full contact). Very sane in terms of what is required of your joints. Footwork is important but deep stances are not.
