Hey,
In addition to playing bass, I am an actor in amature theater. In fact, I do more acting than I do bass playing. I love acting, I'm pretty good at it, and it's probably more of a passion for me than even playing music.
I know we all love to play the bass; however, I know some of you guys and girls have other hobbies and intersts too (besides other guys and girls).
So...It's time to poke your head out from behind the curtain
Are any of you actors or directors?
It doesn't matter if you're doing amature/community theater, TV, or movies. I just want to know if anyone else around here is an actor or director.

So you're an opera singer?
I'm assuming so since you mentioned your music work separately.

As far as actual work, I've been an extra a few times, but it doesn't extend past that

| | | | I went to film school and made some generally bad student films, I liked to focus on action, thriller and horror material but my strength was cinematography more than directing or writing but I had a lot of parts in other's films as I never minded being in front of the camera despite having no real desire for it. I had the feature role in an indy film Apocalypse Bop. My band played a gig and the writer/directer was there and asked me to try out for this role so I did so hoping to get the band on the soundtrack. I played a character who was an homage to Brando's character Col. Walter Kurtz in Apocalypse Now. I'm not namin names (mine) but if you really want to IMBb I suppose its easy to figure out. It got a very limited release but I got a good write up in the Boston Phoenix but I never wanted to be an actor and never really pursued it, focusing on music instead.
In retrospect I really should have stuck with the acting.

I even helped set up the premeire and went to the 1st (and I think only) showing. The movie isnt so good, and I'm only 'thanked' in the credits. On top of playing the extra role I also worked on the production a few times lighting the scene, working as a boom operator and sound mixer.

I find it less of a pain in arse than being in a band...a bit a more rewarding too.

| | | A local news crew was filming live in San Diego at the beach one time so I went streaking behind them. Does that count?
Only kidding.
I do have a friend that I grew up with who is now an actor. He was in We Were Soldiers with Mel Gibson and other movies too but I would have to ask him which ones. He has also done a ton of commercials that I see him in all the time. His name is Steve Nelson or he may spell his last name Nielson? I always forget if he spells it goofy or not?
The only acting I have done on camera was down at the beach when I was in high school they were shooting an infomercial for this frisbee thing that looked more like a 3 sided boomerang that could allegedly go like 300 yards or something. A few people were pretty good at it but I sucked. Everyone who did the infomercial did get a free boomerang frisbee thingy though so that was kind of cool.

No acting from me, tho I may be on the BBC in the next few weeks, sciencing up the place, tho more than likely just in the background.

And I did once perform for Steven Sondheim while wearing boxer shorts on my head.
Somewhat germane: I worked for five years as a professional puppeteer. |

Or a high budgeted student film. Its a strange film, and I was only involved with maybe a 3rd of the production, but I had a blast doing it. I also hooked up the director with the location for its one and only screening. I went with my gf and another friend who appears as an extra.
Here is a link to the imdb page... Within (2009) - IMDb sadly I was not given an imdb credit for my extra appearance or my work on the production. But I do own a copy of the DVD, and I am thanked in the credits!

I'm a bass player only a few gigs a year, or when we tour something that needs bass, sadly. I do end up playing acoustic guitar pretty regularly. On the side, I occasionally get to do an oratorio or recital, but since I'm singing all-year round I rarely get to do a full production of anything.
(sorry I didn't check back on this thread--Taxes this week…)
