It's not really that fast, especially if you compare it to a TT 300zx, but it's my first "performance" car. It has a high insurance premium, only takes premium unleaded gas, and all of the cost effective "performance" engine mods, which adds up to about a little over $2,000, will only get you an extra 30 - 40 rwhp. :-\
People say it's a waste of money to mod the N/A, and maybe it is, but I figure that my driving skills aren't up to par to own a TT, which costs twice as much to buy in the first place and is a lot more high maintenance. It would be a shame to spend 7 - 12k on a TT, throw on $2,000 worth of mods, and then wreck it because I can't handle the power.
That's a nice AMC and Porsche btw. I wanted to get a 944 Turbo for the longest time but decided against because maintenance costs are a little too high for my tastes. :P

It was a money pit for several years. I drove it all through high school. My senior year it threw a rod through the block (the original block ) so my father and I built an engine for it. Once I graduated we took it off the road. That was 1991. We didn't drive it again until 2001. Since then it has less than 2000 miles on it.
My dad passed away a couple weeks ago, so now this car means even more to me than it did. No way I'd ever consider selling it for any amount of money.
I also have a 67 hardtop that I'm working on...

The 79 I bought and modded the crap out of, powdercoating all kinds of stuff and basically turning into an eyesore. Girlfriend wrecked it, and I didn't have the money or time to fix it up again.
The 88 was my first Camaro - POS. 'Nuff said.
The '91 was fun, but still nothing to get excited about.
The first '96 was an RS, and I dropped $3K in suspension mods, another $1K in go-fast stuff, and it ran a respectable (for a GM V6 at the time) 13.3 in the 1/4, but more importantly, it handled like it was on rails - I LOVED that car. Wrecked it myself, sadly, and I wasn't doing anything fun (or dangerous) when I did - the tires just didn't have enough grab and it was something like 4 degrees outside on a new on-ramp.
The second '96 (and last Camaro) had a Powerdyne supercharger @ 9psi, long-tube headers, 3800 stall converter, 4.10 rebuilt rear-end, total drag car, ran 11.7 in the 1/4. Fast as **** from a 30 or 40 roll, if I could get it to hook up. Electrical problems costed me roughly $800 before I decided it needed a better home.
One of these days, a white C5 Z06 will sit in my garage for rainy days, but honestly I don't miss the frustration. |

My Dad's had his tin-top 35 for just over a year.

I have a Sonny Leonard 555 ci motor (824 hp on the dyno sheet) sitting in a crate waiting to go into my 67. My dad and I were making a drag car out of it. According to Sonny, in a 2700lb car it should be good for low to mid 10's. Not sure the weight of this car, but should be in that neighborhood. We have the motor and a TCI Powerglide ready to go into it. We were still sorting out the rear end. One of these days I'm going to finish it. |

I've driven for some guys with those huge numbers at the dyno (I took a bunch of driving classes when I was in my early 20's, and drove for a few folks in and around MD) and those things are insane.
Out of curiosity, how are you getting down to 2700? Straight-up stripping it out for drag? I know of a guy that got his '68 down to 2600, but it was bare metal inside (including roll cage and tubs) - about all that was left was the skin & drivetrain of this car.
:EDIT: Also, if you're not making it a pure strip-racer, then consider 3.83 - those 4.10 rears are kind of a pain in daily driving. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
