I don't on dressing like an 'adult' for a loooooong time to come but I've got a pair of these:

...that I never wear because I feel like I'm not cool enough for them.

I wear DM1460s most of the year.

Have a pair of New Balance 574s which are nice trainers, mine are in a nice blue suede, though sadly the sole is totally worn through now. They look quite smart, as far as trainers/sneakers go.

Have a pair of Jack White brogues for trying to look like a grown up, though certainly only get worn for interviews or funerals and a pair of ghillie brogues for some social occasions. Brogues are always good for being an adult...

Though I do agree with other posters, who cares, for day to day use, wear what's comfortable!

+1 Sketchers make some very nice formal-type shoes that are quite comfortable. They make a broad range of footwear.

My Clark Desert Boots are my favorite pair of shoes right now. I get tons of complements on them as well.

Rockports and Timberland would be a good start. Check Zappos.

I think a pair of those Clark's or something similar will be the ticket.

Only Justin Bieber is cool enough for those! What is up with the belt?

I would recommend any good zipper less engineer boots... Frye, Chippewa, Red wings, Wesco...

I have four pairs of Frye i cycle through and i am very happy with them.

These!

Also Allen-Edmonds boat shoe or driving shoes are great. To go out you can't beat the cap-toe brogue in black or brown.

I would say no to all but the boot, and maybe the Vans. Those "casual shoes" are awful IMO, and don't really go with anything.

Yep, desert boots are an easy-to-wear choice.

These are some of my favorite casual shoes, Bass Brockton:

They go well with jeans, which is about the only thing I wear except when I dress clean.

If you'd like to try western-style boots, try Ariat. They have really changed what goes on inside them to make them MUCH more comfortable than the old-fashioned kind. I got a pair to wear onstage, and I really like them a lot.

I second this! I teach, so I'm on my feets all day...(yes, that was deliberate...)and I'm either going to be wearing a pair of Ariats or Luccheses in the classroom. They're also on my feet on stage, out for a beer or burger, or just about anywhere else. You can dress them up or down. Very functional and practical footwear. Then again, I AM in Texas...y'all...

You need to concentrate on STYLES of footwear.

Go into a decent store like Macy's, Dillard's or Nordstroms and ask them to show you an Oxford (good for all business wear), a dress boot, and see what else is there. I like the Clarks and other "desert boot" styles, and there are an increasing number of shoes with more comfortable soles which are a lot more foot-friendly than leather soled dress shoes but which have nicely turned out uppers which are "dressy". Rockport has made a living out of them.

Sorry, I don't buy Docs for business or anything but straight casual wear unless you work in IT or some other occupation where you live in a virtual closet and don't mix with actual people. They're comfortable but not business shoes for most businesses.

Some business or dress clues:

NEVER wear brown shoes with black, navy or grey slacks or suit. Never. Black shoes only.

With tan, green or khaki slacks, wear brown or tan shoes. Wear black shoes with these slacks only if you also are wearing black clothing to go with the slacks.

Shoes are ONLY appropriate for business or dress when they are polished. Nothing tells people you're a slob faster than shoes which are scuffed up and non-polished. If a man won't take care of his shoes, it shows that he's lousy at details. Trust me...people have gotten passed over in job interviews because of battered, unpolished shoes.

Your belt color should match your shoe color. Brown with brown, black with black.

And this is not advice for job interviews - it's basic advice for any man who wants to look like he knows how to dress. Athletic shoes go with athletic wear, jeans, and if you need to, khakis (including grey, green and tan khakis). Nothing else.

I'm going to have to disagree with most of these points.

I can agree with this, I have some DM boots, but they are definitely not suited for most work environments, and neither would the oxfords be.

NEVER wear brown shoes with black, navy or grey slacks or suit. Never. Black shoes only.

With tan, green or khaki slacks, wear brown or tan shoes. Wear black shoes with these slacks only if you also are wearing black clothing to go with the slacks.
Conversely, one should almost never wear black, and black shoes should only be worn with black pants. Life is too short to be so boring. Of course there are other things that play into this, so YMMV.
Look here for some good advice: http://www.effortlessgent.com/category/shoes/

Bostonian Bolton is the shoe that I wear everyday with jeans into the office. Heck, I wear them most days outside of the office. Come in brown and black, and the best part... slip ons!
