I was walking through town last week and came upon a store that sells folding bikes, particularly Brompton bikes. I tokk one for a spin and was impressed. They do look very nerdy, but I can see a couple of those in the trunk of the car for checking out the lay of the land on weekends with my wife.
Every bike is a compromise of some sort. These clever (and expensive) designs can be light and very compact. Some have drop handlebars and are very quick. There are a bunch of Youtube videos on Bromptons and Bike Friday's that are convincing.
Anybody out there have expericne with these?

On a related note, here's what I really would absolutely LOVE to get a hold of:
British WW2 military folding Parachutist's bike

It was functional but the seat post wasn't a good one and it snapped off while I was on a trek far far away from home! Nothing like having to ride standing up for 30 miles! |

@ OP, I'm a bicycle enthusiast myself, and I'm looking at something like the Dahon Vitesse series to get around town. Very clever stuff.
