I just picked up a dog wandering down a 4 lane highway. No collar, obviously abandoned, and severely starved. I'm taking him home, and to the vet asap.... Just looking for advice on feeding him, etc. I think quarantining him from my other dogs is a good idea, and a flea and tick bath as soon as I get home. Unfortunately, he's in for another 4-5 hour trip

They seem to cure any skin problems, rashes, heal cuts, wounds, etc. I'm sure the Vet will get him good as new. |

back on his feet, but F L Knifemaker gave you the right advice on water and small amounts of food. Keep us posted on how it all works out. |

Did he have tags or anything? Will you be keeping him if you can't find the owner? |

Not sure how they do it in Ohio but I would assume they tattoo the dog at birth. Unless it's a mutt, or inbred, or escaped from a puppy mill.
What's the breed?
Oh and be careful. Don't take too many risks with a stray ever. I'm not a vet but I used to work in a pet supply store and you have no idea how many stories I've heard about people picking up strays only to discover, painfully, that it has a quirk that sets it off. Many abused dogs are like this. One guy found a dog that was fine until it saw a broom. At the sight of a broom it would go berzerk. Same goes for my cat for example. He was a stray, and is great, but if anyone puts their hand anywhere near his rear, he will shed it to pieces.
Just be careful, but good job on the rescue.

No tags, severely underfed to the point of near starvation....she looks like the pics you see of abused animals. She was stuck in my trunk for a while, I just got to a store for food and water. She ate a little, and is laying on her blanket on the back seat. Report more later

I like to consider this my contribution to recycling.

I'm not making an effort to find her owners....anyone this irresponsible enough to let her get to this condition isn't getting her back.

What if the dog ran away a month ago, and that's why it nearly starved to death? Most likely you are right, but I would try not to assume the worst just yet. |

One thing.....she likes riding in cars, she just did 7 hours plus without a peep. I convinced the wife that HER giving her a bath would be a good idea....I think she prefers car rides to the baths. She also seemed pretty frightened of my dogs....give it time I guess.
For me, no collar and no tag is a big part of the irresponsibility. I suppose it could have gotten lost somewhere on the journey, especially with the weight loss. I will post a craigslist ad for the area I found her, but they better have a good excuse, be willing to make the 9 hour round trip to come get her, and be willing to pay for the vet bills that will be incurred. Otherwise, we'll foster her and find her a good home......or possibly keep her ourselves, even if another dog is the last thing we needed.
