Any of you have emergency preparedness kits? What's in them?

My wife is paranoid that an earthquake is going to hit and we need to be prepared. I agree, better to be ready. I've looked at some on amazon and they seem OK.

What are some of the things you have in your kits?

Haha,

a buddy at my old job was watching a YouTuber (Mr. Lockandload who's a militiaman in denial) and was trying to get me on board with an emergency kit.

I'm starting small, just little things as I go along. I normally have bottled water in my house, I've began keeping some of the twist ties from the grocery store. When I get fast food, I always keep the salt and pepper. It makes crappy food taste food, so I feel that I'll come in handy.

Eventually, I'll invest in a lithium ion flashlight. ...That's about all I've got now.

And then there's an SKS I'll get when I get my acquisition license.

If you add a gun to that you would have a pretty good small kit, Jonathan.

Yes, I have one for each member of our family and a few extras in case someone else needs one. It is all kept in my shed in the backyard. Nine gallons of water for each person in addition to the pre made kits we bought at Costco. Each kit is in a five gallon bucket. We also made up one more bucket with some spare clothes.

We're ready.

On another note, Monday is the 10 year anniversary of a fairly major earthquake that struck this area. According to state officials, only 25% of Washington residents have survival kits.

Google: "Bug-out bag contents". You'll find plenty of detailed lists.

One word answer: Machete.

Everyone should have everything they'll need to survive two weeks in the worst possible scenario, no food, gas, water, or power.

I lived in Northridge in 94. Coming home from working the late shift in a bar at 3:00 AM my gas tank was right on empty. I thought boy I really need gas but I'm too tired, I'll get some tomorrow. Well a major earthquake hit Northridge shortly thereafter. One of the all-time big ones. There was no gas to bought anywhere. No food to be bought anywhere, the ATM's were all down, the banks were all closed, it was three days of hell!

And hey, MJ5150, that "major quake" we had in Seattle ten years ago, was like a minor aftershock in California!!!!!!!! LOL

Yeah, you're probably right. I was on the 25th or 27th floor of a building in downtown Seattle, so it was a big deal to me for sure.

When putting food & water in your kits, remember that they still have shelf lives, and to change them out from time to time.

The stuff I use most of the time, on a keyring -

Tritium Kit Marker (find them if you drop them in darkness) Maratac AAA LED torch, Split Pea petrol lighter, Shelby can opener, Maratac Key Screwdrivers, one cross, one flat, 100 db Whistle. Good for gig's, and everything else useful outdoors whatever.

For a night in the open, I've got a simple bivvy tent, waterproof sleeping bag, a radio/batteries, Triangia spirit cooker/fuel/simple eating implements, Victorinox single blade knife, a towel, camo string, Imco petrol lighter, mp3 player, water/container, it all goes in one rucksack. I've found everything there to be useful to have around for a quick 'grab and go' newly realised mtbiking trip or whatever, but the real saver for comfort are the clothes you take (layers etc) ime.

There's flashlights, propane and propane accesories, and other outdoorsy type stuff for camping in my basement. Guns here and there throughout the house..... Not really a kit persay.

I always make sure I have about 5lb of rice and 5lb of beans (Dry) just in case I gotta feed me and mine for a couple weeks. There's usually food besides that in the pantry, and I gotta have a good 20 gallons of beer in my cellar.....

The worst I figure I have to look forward to is an epic snowstorm, or maybe an organization of evil people doing something evil. I imagine in either instance, I'll probably just stay home......
