No i'm not depressed, i have a gf, and two gigging bands with a good amount of friends.
BUT with that out of the way.
Has anybody over here ever come to the conclusion they aren't that smart? Like actually come to terms with it?
I got my college marks back and lets face it my average was less then stellar, sure i had to slack on that one class (too many courses) but even the ones where i thought i'd do well i did bad. I mean I tried and got less then stellar marks.
Also it got me thinking, its always been like this. Never took an "advanced" course, never had the greatest marks. I was even put in a English prep course because i did not have "college" level english writing.
Not only that but i have lived in a french province for 7 years and still can' speak french well. My english vocabulary isn't the best. I never excell in anything really. Bass wise i'm good, i guess but i could be a lot better. Plus its the only instrument i can play. Never got any awards. Can't find a job. And people seem to think i'm an idiot. To be fair i do screw up a lot though.
Now i mean i guess i could live accepting that i'm not the brightest of the bunch, its just kind of funny because i was raised in a house with parents that excelled academically and always expected me to go into University and have good marks etc.... So its kind of weird figuring out that i am one of those dumbasses.
Well at least my band is getting gigs |

Oops - didn't mean to touch a nerve with the French there.
The only serious thing I can say is that there's a difference between being smart and being educated. You seem fixated on the latter when the former is more valuable anyway. |

I'm a lot better off knowing my limitations in that area and I have a lot of respect for those people I know who are smarter that way.

Speaking of not that smart, I got a nice taste of that feeling in Paris. Contrary to stereotype, Parisians were all really nice to me - probably because after a dose of my horrible, "barely remember it from high school French" they thought I was brain damaged. |

I'm a walking poster child for ADD
then again there's one of my favorite old sayings that I use to rationalize being a dumb-arse:
"If you truly realize that you are not as smart as you think you may be, then chances are, you're actually smarter than you think"
or something like that.

Especially during exams. I like to talk trash to the other students, ya know? Psyche em out into thinking they maybe studied the wrong chapters or texts. Really get into their heads.
After I get the exam back, all it takes is one line from a read pen to turn an "F" into an "A". Then I turn to the morons next to me and start yelling "in your face!!!" It defintely yeilds results over the course of a semster. Then I can take advantage of the curve.

| | | I used to think I was funny. Turns out I'm only funny on occasion by accident. I really wanted to be a comedian for a while, so coming to terms with that was a little hard. Also, after listening to demos of other bassists here on TB, I realized I'm not as good as I thought I was. But you guys are.

I can technically execute songs on the bass that I learn, good timing, but I have absolutely no creativity and very little random jam session game.
I get compliments on my playing but always say "It's an illusion" which makes heads tilt. Kind of funny. Anyway, makes me feel like a dumb ass that I just can't be creative.
That's why I'm a Network Engineer for a living I suppose.
Can anyone point me to the creative part of my brain? LOL

We live in an "I am so incredibly special" culture; people are raised to believe that being average is somehow a bad thing, despite the fact that 99.9% of humanity is the same.
