| I worked at UPS a ways back. After the package was dropped off for shipping, we rigorously tested the box for bursting strength and the packing for adequate protection. This was followed by throwing, dropping from 25' to a concrete floor, and crushing with heavy weight. Anything that survived was delivered to the customer. Generally speaking, I'd say that if you would feel comfortable throwing the box from the roof of your house onto the driveway, it's probably good to ship. Don't expect UPS to pay a nickel if it is damaged.
In all honesty, I have to admit that I have not had any problem with UPS, USPS or FedEx. Their system must have improved.
