I don't at the moment but I might start as a way of saving a bit of cash to get me to uni and back on sunyn days. Luckily for me my Uni building has in excess of 30 private shower rooms that are always empty, so I can wash up if I need to before going to lectures and seminars!

Riding to/from work nearly every day -- helps that the weather is always nice here in Northern California.

Even better is that I save the money from gas to GAS :-). --Kent

I'm starting back up next week. Bicycles aren't allowed on the base between Nov 1 and Apr 30 each year.

Here's my ride. My commute is an easy 5 miles. A three-speed is perfect for urban riding, trips to the store, etc.

Why do you have a picture of a Tokomak in your profile?

I did my MSc thesis based on experiments on such a device (Tokamak).

this is probably a bad place to ask, but it will probably get more responses here.

is there some kind of mountain street bike hybrid that i could get? its been years since i have done any cycling but with gas prices and G.A.S prices i could live with riding a bike instead of working solely to feed my car.

you can do as I do, and buy a mountain bike and put street tires on it.. I just ordered a set for daily commuting since I will be on paved roads.

If I feel like going for a trail ride just swap out the tires.. And go..

But 90% of the time I will be on paved roads so the street tires will help tremendously.

I just like the more heavy duty parts and size of a mountain bike versus a road bike.

BUT.......

You will encounter a new form of gas... LOL with parts/upgrades/etc.. I just put a new handlebar on today. I need to order some Sidi shoes so I can put my Speedplay Frog pedals back on. And I am looking for a new stem with a little more length and rise.

I'd love to commute to work via bike, but my city is less than friendly to the local cyclists. In fact, some of us racers have been targets of redneck/retards driving, even though we're using the shoulder and not in their way. Luckily I still put about 150 miles on my bike per week. I'd be able to add another 90 per week biking to and from work.

yeah id be beating the hell out of the bike from time to time on the trails but mainly street use. would regular mountain bike tire wear out faster on the street? i think a trip to the local bicycle shop is in order.

I wouldnt say they wear out faster but once you ride with a city tire on paved versus the knobby one you wont do it again LOL..

Resistance and Effort.. Less Resistance = Less Effort

The ride is so much smoother, too.

As others have noted, street tires will do the trick. Pay attention to the pressure rating -- the higher the better in terms of reducing rolling resistance.
