I don't think he's over-rated, because that would mean that the majority of people think he's great.

They don't.

lolz!!! golly gee it's hip and cool to rag on M Night lately, I wanna too!

didja miss the other thread??? or were you busy basking in yer fabulosity?

IMO, he's only overrated directly proportionate to his love of taking chances and going AGAINST HOLLYWOOD'S NORMS. Heaven forbid.

To clarify: I'm not ragging on him. I'm saying that, if anything, he's the underdog here. Surely one look at the other thread proves that.

But if you really think he's the one taking chances and ignoring the Hollywood model, you're misinformed. There are many great filmmakers who work outside the Hollywood system. M Night Shamalyan isn't one of them.

i forgot which movie it was, but during the trailer for "the happening," the audience burst into laughter when it went, "by m. night shyamalan." not good when the mere mention of your name results in laughter when thrillers are your thing and not comedies.

unbreakable = pretty good
6th sense = great
Signs = not bad at all
lady in the water = HILARIOUS
The village = weakest of them all

Batting over .500 from where I sit because the good ones were pretty damn good. He creates great atmosphere, I just think he needs co-writers to flesh out his generally very clever premises.

Nope I don't think he is overrated at all. He has some great ideas for movies and I have enjoyed them all. A wonderful director IMO.

Signs is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I get scared quite easily by movies, and I *laughed* the whole way through that movie. (OK, is it just me, or did the aliens in Signs look like the Protoss race in StarCraft? That certainly didn't help ;-)) It seems to me like Mr. Shyamalan can actually come up with decent premises for his movies, but they all turn to utter crap (I don't know about the Sixth Sense, haven't seen it myself but that's the only movie of his that I'll believe could be decent).

Now I see in the T.V. ads for his new movie, the best thing they can come up with to say about it is how it's his "first R-rated feature".

Come on. Terrible director.

I have no idea who he is, but I think that Oreos and the Mona Lisa are overrated.

Watching Unbreakable at the movies had me swearing out loud during a movie for the first time ever. That ending is just such a cop-out "They called me Mr. Glass!" Well, have a lollipop ya angsty tosser - get over it, you old man! I wouldn't swear out loud again until I saw Kingdom of The Crystal Skull a few weeks ago...but that was more to signal embarrassment.
I don't think he's overrated, as he's often ridiculed. I enjoyed 6th Sense though and I'm going to give this new one a shot too.

his name always makes me laugh in film trailers- because of the way it sounds when spoken by the usual over-the-top gruff voiceover guys.
Chow Yun Fat is another.

The only two movies he has made that I've liked so far were Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. Signs and The Village were way too predictable for me to stand them, and I just couldn't get into Lady In The Water. Unbreakable was pretty predictable too, but I still liked it. Sixth Sense I actually went back and watched again to see what I had missed the first time. There's something about The Happening that makes me kind of want to see it though, especially since it's the first movie out of the last 5 he's made that wasn't originally written for Disney.

A bit. The Sixth Sense was incredible, and I've yet to see Unbreakable.
Signs was decent and I haven't seen a Shyamalan film in 6 years.
