Cold turkey withdrawl is worst for the first 3-5 days .

After that's its tough but more of a mental struggle than a combo mental physical.

Gum,dum dum suckers,change your routine .

it's hard but not impossible.

Stick your cigarette money in a jar can or whatever and buy yourself something nice with it as a reward

in America your gonna be taxed to death on cigs and your insurance premiums are gonna be more than a non smoker ,and probably already are.

About $6 a pack now...compared to $1.15 in 1996

Not sure of the actual day, but always Xmas eve as my quit day. It's been ten years now without one. No desire to ever do it again.

Yep, I'm on week 4 of Chantix. 35 Year habit, at times 2 packs a day of unfiltered. For me. Chantix is working a miracle, I can't believe how easy it's made the transition.

I totally agree. I just hit 10 months off the smokes during some trying times with the help of vaping.

Good idea IN-Mike, I'm gonna grab a big bag of lollipops or something. I gotta hit the store in a few minutes anyway and never tried that approach.

EDIT: Two dollars got me 50 of them. I'm liking this approach. Thanks.

That's actually a good thing. When cigs are priced and taxed the way they are in the US, it doesn't completely keep lower-income people away from smoking. Lower income people smoke more than other demographics.

The US likes to add fees and taxes to stuff that disproportionately affect the people who can least afford it.

That's easy enough to offset by investing heavily in Lottery Tickets.......

I stopped cold turkey, for the second time, back in September. Heres to a smoke-free 2013.

It has been 16 years for me and I still miss it every day. I could take a pack of Marlboro lights and take the whole pack and stuff it in my mouth and hoover them down like nothing....lol!

Staying quit is the hard part. I used to go outside when I was teaching at the college at break time just to smell the second hand smoke.....lol!

I quit 6 years before having a heart attack 3 weeks before my 38th birthday! So you never know!

I've quit for a few days, a few weeks, a few months. Once I even quit for five years. Unfortunately I have to quit again now. My idea was to do it some time this week, depending on how a certain work project turns out.

My experience is that quitting is pretty easy IF you're on medication that helps. Chantix has been mentioned. Also Webutrin (which is more commonly prescribed for depression.) Take these kind of things, get a box of nicotine patches for the first week or two and you're golden.

Also, give yourself permission to eat a donut or take a nap during that first week.

Also, even if you're finding it easy and things are going well...if you're like me you'll once in a while find that angry words come flying out of your mouth in an almost uncontrollable way, usually aimed at the other members of your household. Might be important to warn them about this beforehand. Might also want to tell them that day two of Project Quit is probably not the best time to spend the evening with your mother in law while creating a family budget. It's okay to simply avoid stressful situations for those first few days.

Good luck everyone. I'll be joining you in a few days.

Doesn't make any difference. We're talking about addiction AND low income earners, people just feed their kids McDonalds and 2 minute noodles and buy clothes from the op shop so they can afford their smokes. They don't suffer for it, their family and the rest of society do.

We have plain packaging, humongous taxes, anti-smoking campaigns all over the place, and shop cannot even display tobacco products anymore, they have to keep them out of sight under the counter.

People still smoke. You can't make people quit smoking, I'm sure almost everybody in this thread can attest to that, you need to make the decision yourself.

It's actually true that higher taxes lead to fewer smokers, not false. And the contention that smokers are just selfish SOBs who somehow transfer this burden to others instead of themselves is, to put it kindly, a wee judgmental.

I used to smoke a pack of Camels or Players a day. I quit a long time ago but I had good motiivation. My girlfriend (now myk wife) was prone to asthma and cigarettes just did her in. Her or cigarettes? It was an easy choice but very tough to quit. Every time I wanted to smoke I put another stick of gum in my mouth. Sometimes that gum meatball got pretty big.
Someone gave me some good advice that helped me get ready to quit. They said "If you are going to smoke then smoke and enjoy it. Never smoke while you are doing something else, pay attention and enjoy your smoke. " That alone helped me cut down quite a bit and made me aware of how much I smoked.
You can do this thing, good luck to you.
