I've got a gig in August backing Ashur Bet Sargis and Walter Aziz. I have never played any music in this style have any of you???

It seems like fun stuff and there will be lots of hot middle eastern women there

It is at the Gallo Center for the Arts (seats 1250) and will probably be sold out

I've played some Assyrian music back when I was playing a lot of middle eastern music.
Ask if they're doing any Iraqui Debke - very cool rhythm.
That's a very western orchestration, though - no violin or oud?

Oh yea,12 strings (violin, viola, celli) it is poppy Assyrian stuff but still really middle eastern sounding.

Years ago there was an Assyrian band practicing in one of the big conference rooms during a knife show that was in the same building. They drew quite a crowd. I watched them for about a half hour and really enjoyed it.

PS - if you get more interested in the music, there are some good resources in L.A. and Santa Barbara for learning more. PM me if you're interested.
