Well, i just graduated from university, and will be taking a sabbatical that last as long as i find a job. While I have some time off to breathe and think, one thing I want to do is take a trip to new orleans for a week or so (probably the beginning of january). I don't have much money, but I do want to make this a nice graduation present to myself, and at least one night eat at a nice french restaurant. Any recommendations for where to stay for cheap (hostels?) as well as general things to do around the city would be appreciated. If you are from NOLA and want to meet up for an evening, that would be cool too. I know what the tourist catalogues say, but I want to get an idea for the must see from a residents perspective. |

I have always enjoyed my meals at NOLA. Yeah, it's commercial and trendy, but I am a fan of Emeril Lagasse.

Do: Get out of the French Quarter, eat at Jaques-Imo's, catch some live music on Frenchmen St, explore the Garden District, eat at Phil's Grill in Metairie for the best burger you will ever have in your life.
Reality check: Visit the 9th Ward and see how your government is failing this wonderful city. |

Otherwise, I concur with Ben's comments.
