ANYONE have access to Seville or 'Bitter' ORANGES?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone,

I've been scouring the internet looking for a source of Seville oranges (bitter orange) for marmalade making. Anyone have a lead on an online retailer? I've tried ripetoyou.com and they're out.

If any of my warm climate bredren have access to them locally, I'll be happy to work out some kind of a deal. I'm looking for 6-8 pounds worth.

I can get all the regular types easily, but I'm specifically looking for the Seville/bitter oranges.

It was GOOOOOOOD.

I did a batch of early season strawberry in June that was phenomenal (about 8 jars). Then followed up with bing cherry, which has become a favorite of my GF. She uses it on PB&J.

The 4th of July I was at Mz. Skies' parents' house in the country and picked a mix of black raspberries and raspberries in 100 degree late afternoon heat. That batch of jam is my most favorite, and has been in demand by anyone who tried it, but it was only about 5 jars, so all the people who have asked for it for Christmas will have empty stockings.

Then next up was a nice batch of wild Maine blueberry jam...I lucked into the blueberries while visiting my mom in Mass., you know the tiny little sour ones. It came out very very well too.

The strawberry was disappearing at an alarming rate, so when I found a very rare late summer strawberry crop, I bought them and made another run. Not quite as good as the first batch, but still WAY better than anything from the store.

I like my jam not super sweet, so I cut the sugar slightly, added lemon to each recipe and use the no-sugar pectin. It's all worked out and now that I've got a system in place, its super quick and easy.

Now if I can only find some damn bitter oranges.

glad to hear it! i've got a cupboard full of strawberry, blueberry, and mulberry jams. yum, yum. blueberry is my fave. if you wanna give them as gifts you have to get those little jars and make lots of small batches. i usually do pints and keep them for me and the kids! we plow thru them all year.

this summer i tried my hand at pickling peppers cause i had a lot of them. haven't opened them yet.

as for seville oranges, well, there may be a reason you can't find them. according to wiki:

Quote:
Seville orange (or bigarade) is a widely-known, particularly tart orange which is now grown throughout the Mediterranean region. It has a thick, dimpled skin, and is prized for making marmalade, being higher in pectin than the sweet orange, and therefore giving a better set and a higher yield. It is also used in compotes and for orange-flavored liqueurs. The oranges come mainly from decorative trees planted in the city of Seville. Once a year, the council collects them and ship them to Britain to be used in marmalade [1]. The fruit is rarely consumed domestically in Andalusia.[2]
time to book a flight?

watch out for that security stuff tho, i hear its nasty business

love orange marmalade.

how about adding bergamot oranges to some more traditional ones?
Edit: not sure bergamot is edible after some google searching...nevermind.

other than that, I've got one word for you: FIGS.

Yeah, I'd love to do a batch of marmalade as gifts and also a batch to keep for myself. It looks like Seville oranges aren't quite in season since it looks like their peak season is January through March.

I know that there are growers in California, so I shouldn't have to go all the way to Spain for them.
