I'd hazard a guess there's been more Kiwi Australian bands to make it big than there have been actual Aussie ones.
When it comes to immigration, I've heard NZ is far easier to get into the Australia, but still requires a fair bit of hoop jumping. Moving to NZ (or Australia) from the US or almost anywhere at the moment is going to be quite expensive due to the way exchange rates have gone with the whole financial crisis debacle. I didn't catch when you were planning the move, but if exchange rates move back to what they were a few years ago any time soon your money will be worth a considerable amount more than it is now, which could make a world of difference in affordability.
Gonna suck for buying effects pedals off US website though, I've had it too good the past year or two

Do your research there just to be sure. Not sure if import taxes apply to used items that you already own, but we're talking about a government and taxes. You never know. |

Is it possible to buy property there, or is it really expensive? I'm a teacher with dual citizenship (US/British) with 12 years of teaching experience. I heard they're looking for teachers. How are teacher salaries there? |

Actually low brow clientele is where I've been working for the last 10 years. I'll start looking into it. Thanks. |

Property is affordable-ish, depending on what you're looking for. Check Harcourts.co.nz for stuff in the Waikato region. Living IN Raglan can be expensive- or at least was when I was there.
I lived about halfway between Hamilton and Raglan for the 6 years I lived there. I was closer to Hamilton than Raglan (near whatawhata if you're google maps inclined).
In terms of teaching, it's definitely possible, but some of that will depend on what you teach and are qualified to teach. Check the NZQA and NZIS websites for that information.
If you want to be close to Raglan, Hamilton is probably your best bet for teaching. I taught at a pretty nice boarding school in Hamilton and the when I left Santa Ana in 2001, the pay in NZ was almost equivalent to what I was making in Santa Ana. Don't know how that pay scale has changed since I left in 2007 though.
The nice thing about that Waikato area is that there is decent surf (not the nice left at Raglan, but not bad) over at Mt. Manganui, which is only an hour the other direction. From Hamilton, you can be in Raglan in about 35 min and at the break in 40-ish min and can be in Tauranga and at the Mount in just over an hour.
Shoot me a PM if you want- I still have some contacts down there in education- one of them is the deputy headmaster at one of the bigger schools in Hamilton. |
