Simple, any notaries here?

How busy are you, what exactly do you do, etc. etc.?

How about an overview of the job?

Everyone I know that is one doesn't make much money from it.

Just like an extra thing to do to make 15 bucks here and there.

Seriously? I actually don't think I've seen somebody collect a fee for it...most secretaries are notaries where I live. Some lawyers. You pay the state like 50 bucks a year to do it. I dunno. I don't think I've ever heard it called a job.

The job and requirements vary from state to state. The only people that can really help you with this are people from your state.

Same with me. My mom just became one, and I'm as clueless as you are.

I am. My dad needs a notary to do some things for him at work so instead of paying the notary down the street he made me sign up for it. I did it very recently and am still waiting on my notary package stuff to come in. I don't really see myself making money from it because in Cali at least notaries are only allowed to collect 10 bucks a pop... unless you're a traveling notary. Then it's whatever you want.

I am a Notary in NC.

I am allowed to charge $5 per signature when notarizing a document. It is very serious business in NC because you are considered an officer of the court. It doesn't pay much, but if you use it illegally it can land you in jail real quick.

As for my job, I am the IT Manager. We manage Not for Profit Trade Associations. My boss asked for volunteers to go take the class so I did. I end up notarizing PAC reports for the most part each month.

I was a notary at the newspaper I worked at years ago; I was the graphic designer. All we used it for was when townships sent in their minutes and agendas for their meetings, we'd send a copy back and a notarized document stating when it ran in the paper, and for how long.

IIRC, all you are doing as a notary is proving that the people who signed the document are the actual people that signed the document, making it an official document and giving it a little more weight in court. The only time I notarized anything outside of work, was when a buddy was loaning a friend a good deal of money and wanted a contract written up to help him if he ever needed to pursue the matter.

I'm a Notary in MA. The maximum I could charge is $2.00. I have yet to charge a fee a Notary fee. I don't notarize documents often but I'm guessing I have done several hundred over the years.

So you want to enter the glamorous and lucrative world of Notary Public?

It's usually a convenience type thing that supports other "products". You will usually find someone at the bank that is a Notary. Why? Because many bank documents need to be notarized. So the bank will make sure that at least one person is a notary. Secretaries in law firms or insurance companies, and lawyers may also be notaries.
