Anyone know anything about Stradivarius?

Sign in to disble this ad
Talking to my Grandmother today and found out she has a Stradivarius willed to me. I know they are violins made by Stradivari, in the late 17th century(?), but that's about the extent of my knowledge. Would I be able to use it, or is it obsolete by now? Also any other history people want to share?

Could be worth a million dollars. Really.

But last I heard all real Strads were accounted for, so it may be fake..

If it's a real one, or even if it's not, the violon would probably have a name, all of his instruments were named I think, form there you could do research and find out if it's a legit one. Can't back this up with evidences tho, it's just what I heard and I'm too lazy to research.

I have a friend that builds violins. If you have any pictures,he'll be able to tell you what it is. He owns a violin that was made by the guy that taught Stradivarius how to build violins.

The last person to see the violin was my Grandma in the 70s when it was verified as a Stradivarius, it was her sister's only possession when she came to America and has been in my family since the 1800s. Sadly she's bedridden and so is my grandpa so I'm not going to ask them to go to the attic and dig it out for pictures. I'll have it verified again when I head up there in the spring and most likely will donate it if it is indeed as rare as you guys are saying.

I wouldn't donate it if I were you, it's you famiy's heritage, you can lend it to a museum/exposition of your choice tho, and to a greedy extent it could probably pay your college..car...house...

Pff, donate it

No, it has sat in too many attics in it's life time. I'd much rather people see it at a museum or something.

Pretty sure you could rent/sell it then, or lend it at least... Donating it would be stupid imho.

I bet there would be philharmonic players, or symphonies that would love to lease it and use it as a showcase. You could insure it and create a business around it. Not only would it be seen but perhaps used. Man so many ways you could set your family up with this thing. DON'T DONATE IT!!!

I've been wanting to take up violin; I'll give you $150.

FYI, if it really is a Strad, the wood contains more fungi and animal urine (including human) than you'd like to hold directly under and in contact with your face.
