Anyone out there an Old Horror Movie Fan?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been into horror and sci-fi movies (old/vintage especially) probably longer than I have been into music.... I sometimes wonder how many of my peer's are into the same thing. I generally look to others to suggest something great that I haven't seen or heard of, so if there are any of you sci-fi/ horror geeks out there besides myself recommend me some of your favorites to pack my netflix que with...... Heck I probably could recomend some good ones myself based on what you like......

I like old horror movies and some sci-fi. I have the pretty usual assortment of favs. The original Night of the living dead is way up there for me.

Yes, anything Romero is typically great. I am even liking a lot of the remakes of his films that are coming out these days..... I am wondering when Rob Zombie is gonna try to remake a Romero classic, like he did with the John Carpenter "Halloween" films.

After seeing "the crazies" I feel like Romero remakes are for the sake of making ol' George a few bucks. Nosveratu is also a great flick. If you haven't seen "plan 9 from outerspace" grab a six pack of your favorite beer and have a good time. Also the MST3K horror movies are great ie "pod people"

I always stop channel surfing if I find a movie starring Christopher Lee. Best vampire ever (Well, second best after Lugosi).

Our guitar player and drummer are big into those movies and the guitar player recently loaned me the following movies to watch.

It Came From Outer Space
The Black Scorpion
The Atomic Submarine
This Island Earth
20 Million Miles To Earth
The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms
The Day The Earth Stood Still (original version)
Jason & The Argonauts (original version)
The Angry Red Planet

A few more that I have

Torture Garden (when this movie came out, they gave the movie goers a packet of Torture Garden seeds to plant)
The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living And Became Mixed Up Zombies (It was also released under a shorter name Teenage Psycho Meets Bloody Mary)
Santa Clause Conquers The Martians
Crash Of The Moons
Return Of Dracula

I have a lot of 80s horror and sci-fi movies too.

If you have a Big Lots store near you, they have some of the really old horror and sci-fi movies for sale on DVD for $3 each and some are double features.

If you're going to talk OLD horror movies, get it right. Universal did it better than any other studio in history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Monsters

I have copies of some the great ones I consider "old"....but I still need a copy of Lon Chaney's 1923 Hunckback of Notre Dame.

In checking titles, I've found that I only have about 20% of the classic Universal titles from the 30's through the 50's!! FOR SHAME!! I gotta do better.

I currently have:

Dracula (1931)
Frankenstein (1931)
The Mummy (1932)
The Invisible Man (1933)
Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
The Wolf Man (1941)
Phantom of the Opera (1943)
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)

Check the website for an amazing list of the true classics.

I'm heading down to Big Lots at lunch time!!

A friend lent me a copy of "The Curse of the Cat People". A horror movie from 1944, and it was VERY good. Kind of psycological thriller/horror.

When I was a kid back in the 60s, Aurora Model Company had model kits of the classic monsters. Monarch Model Company recently came out with new versions of the Aurora Models. Also, there were several different sets of Monster Trading Cards in the 60s and The Outer Limits cards from the orignal TV show were in color.

Universal Monster Trading cards came out much later.

I still have my Aurora models that I assembled and painted in the 60's....Dracula, the Wolfman, Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Hunchback and the Creature from the Black Lagoon!

I was just checking online (a wave of nostalgia hit) and it appears the Revell models available on Amazon.com are created in the same molds as the Aurora originals - they're exact duplicates.

Peter Jackson's early work is very much worth hunting down. "Bad Taste" was a regular mid-week bong-and-beer session for us when I was in college.

I actually found the Hunchback in one of those $20.00, 50 movie packs that they sale at best buy. Also included: The Phantom of the opera(Lon Chaney), Nosferatu, and Metropolis... Among other great films.

My girlfriend and I just wrapped up an MST3K phase. Yes, George is probably racking it in on the remakes. I am also Hearing talks of "Black Sabbath" (Mario Bava) being remade, but who in the world could fill the shoes of Boris Karloff in that one?

I love the 80's re-make of The Thing.

The Conqueror Worm with Boris Karloff has some pretty hellish torture scenes...saw it at a comic book convention ages ago.

The Forbidden Planet
Dementia 13
The Tingler

So many decent classics yet to be named...

I've seen most of those and concur on their understated greatness. Don't forget the original House on Haunted Hill -- actually anything William Castle made (13 Ghosts, the Tingler, etc).
