Saw the stutter thread and though about my girlfriend who suffers from minor tourettes. There not bad like some of the cases I have seen on MTV, and they are RARELY vocal. However I noticed they once were pretty common then they went away almost entirely and now there common agian. About 4 an hour. I wonder if she'll ever get over this or if itll be this way for ever. That was one thing I liked about her weird, but pretty cute. She'll be watching a movie and just do her little head twitch which is mostly all that happens.
But every now and then she'll do it vocally and let out a little eeeaaah, or bleee , there cute. It sometimes breaks my heart though, as she is a server at a resturant and is not allowed to carry soups because she has dropped a few, I think spilled one on a customer once , she says she hasn't really had any messups like that or outbursts at work since but I'm not sure if I believe that. |

I never had his class, but we all knew about it, and sometimes he'd be crossing the quad and just shout out some swear words. We all enjoyed it and I think sometimes he took advantage of it by yelling out swear words just cuz he wanted to.

| | *******er Emeritus(does anyone remember that? No?) | | Join Date: Apr 2000 Location: Houston, Texas | | | One of my good friends has tourettes. He rolls his eyes into the back of his head during his twitches, which looks pretty effed up. But since he's such a metal head, when people ask him about he says he's just being metal. It works for him, anyway.
Some people are vocal, some are not. Some lose control of their body (like dropping the soup), and some don't. This friend in question is a guitarist and he says it's never affected him during his playing. And I have to say, watching him playing thrash metal while rolling his eyes in the back of his head is pretty effing metal looking.

I've become quite sarcastic and mouthy when I see this happen (even when I'm not with my wife) and say something like "Wow, people will be making pilgrimages to this parking spot like they do to Lourdes, 'cos all you've had to do is park there and suddenly you're completely cured". I realise that I'm risking a smack in the mouth but since I'm a 2nd Dan Shotokan black belt that doesn't really worry me unduly...but people can still get hostile when you challenge their selfish pig ignorant ways.
One guy recently shot into a disabled spot and sped off towards the shops, vaulting a small set of railings on the way. When I pulled him up on this he said "have you got a problem with that?" I said "Yeah, how the hell are you disabled?" quick as a flash he said "I've got Tourettes...now f*** off". Despite the red mist and the insult I just had to laugh

I know what you mean about the parking spaces though. I had a handicap tag when I broke my foot and I was on crutches. Just going places was a huge production and pain in the butt. So many times, I'd see people waltzing out of these handicap spots, and I had to park somewhere far away. Generally, I would look for a spot that was close by first, and the handicap spots were last resort. I'm better now, but I got a brief taste of what you're talking about here. |

More like strong sexual stuff. Makes some random yelps and such as well. Thankfully he and all out friends are ok at laughing along with it. |

She also always looks over your shoulder when you talk face to face to her. I'm not sure if it's related or not to the tourettes, but is kinda strange. |

The more I look back, however, I think I had a mild case of it in my younger years. I had facial ticks, stuttered, and would sometimes grunt. I grew out of that in high school but now I count stuff all the time, sometimes subconsciously. I count syllables on road signs, syllables on television, words mostly. It actually helps with my bass playing. I count beats subconsciously as well.

The sergeant major couldn't do anything, but simply complained that nobody has cursed him that much in the past fifteen years.

It's a mystery/crime novel told from the point of view of a character with Tourette's. Very interesting read and a great story as well.
From the basic knowledge I have of Tourette's, it seems to have some elements in common with other neurological issues -- like very mild Autism (in the obsessive/compulsive behaviors) and like epilepsy (in the sense of uncontrolled bursts of neurological energy). As a parent of a child with difficult cases of both those conditions, I've seen some behaviors in my daughter that mirror Tourette's in a broad sense. She will often have the urge that she cannot contain to say things repeatedly.
I don't really have anything useful to add, but it is a very interesting condition. I would imagine that it is very difficult to have behaviors out of your control. It's hard for me not to blame my daughter for certain things, but it's also tough to tell what she can control and what she can't.

Nothing terrible happens if I don't, I just start feelign really, really uncomfortable.
