so I can get internet from my friend's house a block down the street and pay him a few bucks a month for it... this way my roommates can use it and pitch in as well... anyone have experience with how well these work?

That would break your neighbor's Terms of Service and be considered theft by the Internet provider. "Neighborhood Internet Signal" refers to some areas/cities that have public Wifi accessible.

I see I see... well our city has a free wifi system set up as well, and I'm only a few blocks from downtown... Maybe I'll try it. Better than paying effin $50 a month for internet.

I recently picked up a USB/WiFi adapter that uses an external antenna. It works pretty well -- definitely better than a built-in antenna. I got it on ebay.

At the WiFi frequencies (2.4 GHz for the more common WiFi band; 5 GHz for the other), there is a lot of attenuation in the cables feeding the external antennas. So, a long cable may reduce or even cancel out the effects of a high gain antenna. Keep your cable as short as possible.
