This.

Have people not heard of narrative archetypes??

eg.

X meets Y
X falls in love
Breakup
Reunion between X and Y
Happy ever after.

Zomg, all movies are the same!

Dances with Wolves/The Last Samuri with blue people....

Two civilizations in war over land...
One soldier is captured and accepted by the other army...
soldier eventually becomes friends with army...
Soldier falls in love...
Soldiers fights in war with other army...
The end.

Who can ever forget Mufasa's soliloquy:

Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

Obviously the pig and the rat were Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern.

How about Tom Stoppard's play "Rosencrantz and Guilderstern are Dead" - inspired by the fact that Laurence Olivier's classic film of Hamlet leaves out these two characters completely, yet makes perfect sense!?

That was an AWESOME movie!! Richard Dreyfus was in it if I recall correctly.

Back when I was teaching I convinced the AP English teacher to show Strange Brew after his kids finished Macbeth. More as a reward than anything but they had to take notes on the similarities and differences. Not as direct a retelling as "O Brother Where Art Thou" was with "The Odyssey" but it clearly is loosely based on Willie Shakes' play.

Of course the list of differences is that Macbeth did not feature:

A flying dog that drinks beer
A drug to make mental ward patients play hockey and fight
Use of a lie detector to tell if someone was lying about farting
Bullets being shot out of a nose in a courtroom

But Bob & Doug are clearly Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
