Well, at least in Australia!

THEY may be holy places of worship and reflection, but new figures show you may not be as safe in a NSW church as you are at a strip club or in a brothel.

The latest data, compiled by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, showed 1600 people were charged with committing a range of 27 offences in the state's "places of worship'' in 2008.

Surprisingly, the figures showed only 282 people were charged in premises classified as adult entertainment over the same offences.

Bureau director Don Wedderburn said the data showed people were just as likely to be assaulted or robbed in the sanctity of a church as they were on the streets.

"Most people would think of churches and synagogues as sanctuaries in society,'' he said.

"But maybe that's naive, because the statistics show they are likely to rob, assault or steal from people there like anywhere else. The figures are genuinely surprising.''

A breakdown of the figures showed that 85 people were assaulted in places of worship, compared to 66 at an adult entertainment premises.

According to the report, places of worship include churches, synagogues, monasteries, mosques, convents, cathedrals and chapels.

Premises listed under adult entertainment included strip clubs, sex shops, brothels, massage parlours, homosexual clubs, gaming houses as well as gambling clubs.

Places of worship were also ahead on sexual offences (16), theft from motor vehicles (33), resisting arrest (seven) and liquor offences (10).

Harassment and threatening behaviour at places of worship (30) was more than double that of adult entertainment (13).

Two people were charged with possessing or using marijuanain places of worship. The figure was a 90 per cent decrease on the previous year, when 20 people were charged with the offence.

Only one person was charged with the offence at an adult entertainment premises in 2008.

I am genuinely surprised! Statistically, that means you are probably better off getting married in a strip club!

Congregations are comprised of people and run by people, and we'd all do well to remember that.

However as much as I'd not like to admit it I'm sure this article is 90% spin and that strip clubs and such have way more incidences that go un-reported because they have bouncers to deal with the offenders....unless Australia is different.

The whole article is exactly the type of logical fail I've come to expect from "journalists".

Correction: comprised of and run by deluded people. Or even, arguably, certifiably insane people.

It really depends on what you choose to worship.

well, you don't get many bouncers in church... not working there anyway.

on a related note, a friend of mine was once beaten up by a priest, which would lend weight to the article's theory.

I mean, it makes sense.

The one-two punch of jiggly bewbs and beffed up bouncer dudes makes even the desire to commit a crime in a stripclub miniscule.

That's funny because I always get hump on the knee. They go away after I rub them out.

Hah, its probably true, although the results are majorly skewed.

I once saw another article that said church was the safest place to be, as there is a very small percentage of people who die while in a church. Much safer than a hospital, never go to one of them if your sick, something like 30% of people die in hospital!

I like to think there is a happy medium, like maybe a stripper church?

Stripper church -- YEE HAW!!

It is funny, but yeah, it's like the hospital thing. As lovely things as strip clubs are, I suspect that if you ran the number of crimes per capita of attendance the church would turn out to be a wee bit safer.

Stripper Nuns would certainly be a good draw for the stripper church.
