So, yeah, ive been testing the waters out there (I may have to move down the road, due to personal matters). And Ive noticed something. When you go to a company's website, you go and click on "careers" or "employment" or "find job", right? Then you go and apply using their online application.

What I dont get is that on most online applications, you have to list (on the application), your most recent 3-4 jobs, employment dates, duties, etc. It is very time consuming doing this, tabbing to each block to fill in the info required.

Then at the end of the application, it asks you to upload your resume!!

WHA!!!

Couldnt they have just asked for that to begin with and skipped the tedious employment history part of the application. I dont get it. Do you??

Agreed, but it's probably used as a way to check and see if there are any discrepancies in what you're saying and if you simply double check your work. Little things like that, while tedious, can probably tell a guy in HR whether you're careful about your work and take yourself seriously. Plus those fill-in things generally give the person reviewing your form some information that typically isn't found on a resume (like a previous supervisors name, number, and position).

I just finished with this process a month ago. Genius huh? Two weeks later I followed up with the head of head of the search committee via email asking if everyone who applied would be contacted regardless of if they were selected for an interview, thanks for the opportunity, blah, blah, blah. Going on three weeks after that I still have yet to hear anything.

Moral of the story. Don't expect anything more than you the usual rudeness and lack of consideration than you get from the avergae jackleg on the street.

Dude, it was like that in the 90s when I was freshly out of school looking for a job. I even worked in HR for a short period, and let me tell you, you would be suprised the way HR people talk about candidates and applicants behind closed doors. You would think HR was god by the way they talked. And they held these applicants and their applications/resumes to almost god-like standards. It was pathetic.

True.... but couldnt you give them that info (past supervisors, #s, etc.) after you are selected for an interview. They arent going to call and do reference checks/employment verifications before the interview. I used to work in HR for a short period, as I mentioned earlier, and also my uncle was an HR guy for 30 years. Both of us agree on this. Its a time waster.
