Just announced today (30 mins ago) and a co-worker who I like was let go. The poor gal just got married and they were planning a big trip/honeymoon thing next week. damn.
I have honestly, no lie, lost count in how many layoffs we've been hit with at my job over the past few months.
Somehow, through some miracle, I survived this one. I don't anticipate surviving the next round, we're just literally running out of people and compared to who's left, I don't have the same amount of seniority...
sorry, just venting. This sucks.
Help me Obi-One-Obama, you're my only hope....

There were a lot of people who'd been working at the company for years and years who got laid off, one guy I was quite close with ended up commiting suicide. He was having trouble all round and the lay off was the icing on the cake. Almost been a year now
Sucks to hear about the girl who just got married. Hope you're keeping ya chin up!

You're always a better candidate while your working than when you're not. If it turns out they don't lay anyone off and the other company offers you more, then your in a good situation instead of a bad one. La La La. I fart rainbows. |

here i thought working my ass off (obviously harder than everyone else), kissing a bit of ass and not complaining ever would keep my job secure. nope.. all about politics.
the managers all loved me. the accountants loved me. apparently the owners cant afford to pay me... you know.. because they can afford a hummer h3, spinners for said hummer and a custom painted chopper. they also keep their expensive breed dog in day car and are putting their son through college.
nope.. no room to PAY EMPLOYEES.

Housekeeping will be about 4 people short, maintenace 1 person short, front desk 1 person short. If they start laying people off...well, true, I've seniority (18 years) but in a way that makes me more vulnerable than those who haven't been there as long as I've been - if they let me go, they can hire someone to replace me who makes a good $3 / $4 less than they're paying me. So even those of us with 'time in grade' aren't that much 'safer' when it comes to layoffs than those 'junior' to us. Worse, while I can probably find a job of some sort in the area, it would probably pay 1/3 or even 1/2 what I make now...I'd actually make more $$ on unemployment than on a job that pays that much less than what I make now...At least I don't have to worry about losing health benefits or pension; I am not eligible for either at the job anyway...

He's fairly secure in his bindery manager position (for now) but his wife's department is being systematically shut down.

I have a few friends who work for the same company, the guitarist from my band and a former roommate of his. The guitarist survived the layoffs, his friend (who just got married this past weekend) did not. Tough time to be laid off, but they at least got a little bit of a package when they left. Best of luck to you. |

| | | | Seniority doesn't mean crap unless you're protected by a collective bargaining contract. Unfortunately, most people are employees at will and can be terminated for any reason that doesn't fall under protection of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or some other legally protected right (e.g., taking time off under the Family Medical Leave Act).
I've pretty much accepted the fact that American Dream has been sold out from under me. Perhaps it was always a sham to begin with.

When everyone who still has a job is constantly fearful of losing theirs, nobody will spend and the economy will not recover, leading to more layoffs. It's a bad situation.

I have to go in to work three hours early tonight. Our division management is meeting with HR managers to discuss the recent closures and scaling back in other operations and how that is going to affect us. Right now our jobs are secure (in fact we are hiring fairly heavily) but only because work is being consolidated to our location. I do empathize with everyone who has lost their job and also for those on "the bubble". That's not something I'd want to go through.
Best of luck to all of you.
