I'm imagining Arthur's soul saying something like:

I believe he invented, or had a large part in developing the first communications satellite.

No small feat.

R.I.P. Mr. Clarke.

He is credited with dozens of concepts we take for granted today. Satellites, cell phones, hand held computers, artificial stimulus for hearing impaired, artificial gravity, the list is almost endless.

The world lost one of the great imaginations of the generation.

RIP ACC

Wow!--a giant has passed. One of my favorite authors, and thinkers.

Previous poster: "I believe he invented, or had a large part in developing the first communications satellite."

--Indeed!--he explained this story in an article titled, in hindsight, "How I Lost a Billion Dollars in My Spare Time". As I recall, it was specifically about geosynchronous satellites [the kind that orbit in a fixed position in the sky] as cosmic 'relay towers'. In 1949 that was truly visionary. Today it's taken for granted, except when your DirectTV is acting up.

And he had that wonderful dry British wit. Travel well, Arthur.

I read that they call that kind of orbit a "Clarke orbit".

+1 to most of the sentiments expressed here. The man had an all too rare talent - original thinking.

I personally have 13 of his novels.

He showed his firm belief in humanity's good will in his many works.

I will miss him
