Artist throws talkers out of concert....

Went to see Mike Doughty last night. Fantastic performance.

The show was in the tiny Bearsville theater (more of a barn with great acoustics).

There were a bunch of late-teen to twenty-somethings standing by the side of the stage. They were enjoying the show but wouldn't stop talking (maybe a bit/lot high?)

Mike asked them if they'd please keep quiet in a friendly "stage bantering way" three times. He basically told them that their talking is interfering with the rest of the audiences' ability to enjoy the show.

The fourth time he told them to get their money back and leave. Security escorted them out. They chatty-pattys were stunned and in disbelief. I guess mommy and daddy never told them to be quiet before.

I have to say i appreciated it. It seems too many people don't understand common courtesy--

On the other hand it was a far cry from the punk rock shows I went to in the late 70s. Then you'd get thrown out for NOT throwing something.

Then it should say on the ticket that people should be quiet during the performance.

Good thought-- but doesn't that assume you're supposed to talk while someone is performing and this show is an exception? These people werent chatting between songs, they were babbling while he played.

Again, isnt the accepted norm that you don't talk while someone is performing, acting, giving a lecture, etc.?

He even mentioned that if this was a bar gig he'd expect people to talk but this was a theater gig.

Good for Mike. I like people standing up against disrespectful idiots. If you and your buddies want to chat all night long, go to a coffee shop.

People should have a certain amount of awareness of what is acceptable behavior in the complex social situations we find ourselves in; from gatherings with family and friends to shopping or eating in restaurants and watching public performances. It's pretty obvious that at a show like you describe, carrying on a conversation like that is totally unacceptable. If it isn't obvious, the fact that the performer took the time to interrupt his own show to make this information known not once, but three times, is a dead giveaway.

These socially clueless nincompoops were lucky to get a refund after being tossed out.

Yes. Great idea. Let's completely dumb everything down for the 'lowest common denominator' members of society. It's entirely unreasonable of us to expect that anyone should act responsibly or politely in public without explicitly being told to.

Music is all about the entertainment, if you need to talk to enjoy it then go ahead.

And if I need to frogmarch noisy people out of a club to enjoy myself then I should also go for it.

How far do you take that? What if you need to punch people in the face to enjoy it? What if you need to drop your pants to enjoy it? When does it stop? Who decides?

Just excellent. Well said, sir. The idea that it should say "no talking" on a concert ticket is idiotic beyond belief.

I didn't mean you are given a free ticket to do whatever you want and call it "entertainment," as long as no one is physically harmed I see no harm in it. And if they were not informed that they couldn't speak that is hardly right either, as they could have planned it as a social event. If you've seen the video of the Who Live at the Isle of Wight you can tell that the crowd is having a great time (well at least during the first and final parts) and another thing is is that they are all talking to eachother, no harm came out of it. Most people who were there say it was fantastic and no one complains about the people that were talking, so I really don't see why they should be tossed out.

That's a little like writing "Attention: this coffee is hot" on the paper cup. Legally, you should do it, but it doesn't really serve the clever people.
