Went to see Mike Doughty last night. Fantastic performance.
The show was in the tiny Bearsville theater (more of a barn with great acoustics).
There were a bunch of late-teen to twenty-somethings standing by the side of the stage. They were enjoying the show but wouldn't stop talking (maybe a bit/lot high?)
Mike asked them if they'd please keep quiet in a friendly "stage bantering way" three times. He basically told them that their talking is interfering with the rest of the audiences' ability to enjoy the show.
The fourth time he told them to get their money back and leave. Security escorted them out. They chatty-pattys were stunned and in disbelief. I guess mommy and daddy never told them to be quiet before.
I have to say i appreciated it. It seems too many people don't understand common courtesy--
On the other hand it was a far cry from the punk rock shows I went to in the late 70s. Then you'd get thrown out for NOT throwing something. |

These people werent chatting between songs, they were babbling while he played.
Again, isnt the accepted norm that you don't talk while someone is performing, acting, giving a lecture, etc.?
He even mentioned that if this was a bar gig he'd expect people to talk but this was a theater gig.

It's pretty obvious that at a show like you describe, carrying on a conversation like that is totally unacceptable. If it isn't obvious, the fact that the performer took the time to interrupt his own show to make this information known not once, but three times, is a dead giveaway.
These socially clueless nincompoops were lucky to get a refund after being tossed out.

Let's completely dumb everything down for the 'lowest common denominator' members of society. It's entirely unreasonable of us to expect that anyone should act responsibly or politely in public without explicitly being told to.

The idea that it should say "no talking" on a concert ticket is idiotic beyond belief.

And if they were not informed that they couldn't speak that is hardly right either, as they could have planned it as a social event. If you've seen the video of the Who Live at the Isle of Wight you can tell that the crowd is having a great time (well at least during the first and final parts) and another thing is is that they are all talking to eachother, no harm came out of it. Most people who were there say it was fantastic and no one complains about the people that were talking, so I really don't see why they should be tossed out.
