Asus EEE PC

Just wondering if anyone has seen these yet?

Pretty good concept, cheap portable laptop. They are a bit more expensive right now than they were originally intended to be, if they had come out at the originally intended price say 6 months back, I would have bought one, just because it would be pretty damn useful for containing all my work.

The thing i like most about these wee things is that it uses a SS harddrive, so it apparently boots up really quickly

Its sort of like a cross between a PDA and a laptop!

I don't understand how people work on those small laptops, let alone this small thingie. I want a normal screen on which I'll actually see what I'm writing. If I'll have to work on spreadsheets with a thing like that, I'd rather slit my wrists. Fancy gadget from an engineering POV, but not really useful.

I must be missing the point of these. What on earth can you do with a laptop with 4 gigs of hard drive space?

I just ordered one last night for my girlfriend. It is her birthday soon and I thought I would surprise her with an EEE PC. According to my tracking #, it should be delivered a little later on today. I am really looking forward to checking it out. My current notebook is a Dell Inspiron 1520 and it is a tank. Granted its my gaming laptop for lectures, but it is heavy. If the EEE PC is good, there might be one in the future for me as well.

The computer I'm sitting in front of has an 80G hard drive. I thought that was immense when I bought this thing

Now you can get iPods with that much memory. Things move fast.

You count on internet access and store your files online. This is the future.

I store most of my files with Jungle Drive, and pay Amazon a few bucks a month for storage space. All my data is available worldwide on redundant servers and backed up daily.

EDIT: Errr, I meant Jungle Disk

Just got mine in. I was on the internet with in 5 minutes of opening the box. It's very fast and very easy to use so far. I plan on haveing an external hard drive soon. I ordered an 8gig SD card with it to increase the storage size to 12 gigs.

Im resurrecting this thread. They are now offering a $100 rebate on the 900 series, which makes them come out to about $450 for a 12gb XP system. I am itching to get one. I would be nice to tote around on campus.

A few of the kids at Uni have (the old) one - I had a play and they're pretty nice. They hook straight into campus wifi, and give you web, instant messaging (inclusing skype voice & video) and WP. Perfect if you're out and about round campus. Not really a laptop, but something for keeping you online when you're away from home.

I've got a decent laptop, but if you just have a desktop machine, it could be the perfect partner.

The fast boot-up is a nice thing, but $450 is more expensive than a basic Dell notebook, and I have read that the power consumption on the EEE is nothing to write home about.

The prices over here arent too bad. Granted you could get a proper laptop for the same price, it wouldnt be that great, but probably better than the EEE. I just want one for the ultra portability

I learned today that Asus is not the only sub notebook out there. Elonex sells one for 100 pounds in England. Acer makes one. Who else? Interesting. I wonder if any of these are good enough for gig recording.

They have apparently announced a new version that looks a lot slicker, the Elonex One T.
