Anyone see it yet? I made plans to go tonight but can't.
If they couldn't do anything else, I hope they kept Rand's philosophy unadulterated.
It's so timely with the current state of affairs in the US. |

Everything I've read about it so far indicates this may be an understatement.

| | | | saw the preview a while back, instantaneously decided i didn't want to see it. yes, the story is relevant to current affairs, but i hate that they tried to modernize it, yet insisted on maintaining the whole railroad thing. there was a certain 'pioneer spirit' aspect to atlas shrugged, with people striking oil on the continent and trains being the only source of transport through totally undeveloped stretches of land; this does not fit in modern times. if people have somewhere far to go they'll typically fly, and there are many more routes of trade across the continent than a single railroad. i am really not sure why they made this decision.

I've neither read the novel nor seen the movie, so I won't comment on their specific merits, but I can't say there's any surprise here.

| | Sick and tired of being sick and tired. | | Join Date: May 2005 Location: Belfair, WA | | | Several problems with this movie...
First off, they filmed it in a hurry. When the producer signed on to buy the rights for the movie, he had a pretty good time limit...but no studio wanted to make the movie. So, rather than let the money go to waste, he put part one into production and filmed it.
Secondly, Atlas Shrugged is a way way long book. I'm a reader, who likes reading, and I have to admit...it's not a light read. It's still a great book, but that pretty much means it's either going to be a) cut to shreds to make the book into a workable, actable script or b) a movie shot in several parts, similar to what they did/are doing with the last Harry Potter book.
For the third point, the movies I tend to enjoy are going to get panned by the critics. I know this. Same thing applies to movies that they love. Very very rarely do the two mix...I think the last time we agreed on a movie (Me and critical appeal) was Toy Story 3...the time before that, I'd really have to research...but I'd probably have to say was Iron Man (in 2008). Just because critics don't like a movie though, doesn't mean it won't do well...after all, they don't like action movies for the most part, and those tend to have great box office response. This is a limited release though, so I'm not really holding my breath on that. For example, if I want to see it in the theater, the closest one is about an hour and a half away...
Lastly, I go to the movies to be entertained, not to be preached to; I remember a quote attributed to Cecil B. Demille, which was "If you want to send a message, use Western Union," meaning preaching a viewpoint or a message may tick off your audience. Case in point, Green Zone with Matt Damon - some critics liked it, the actors/crew liked it (otherwise why film it)...tanked in the box office; Fair Game with Sean Penn - same story. This movie is the same thing, but from a different point of view. The people that will like this movie (I'm including myself in this) will probably buy it, or see it multiple times in the theater, regardless of what the critics say. There most likely will be a second one if there was enough demand for it, and if it makes enough money.

The budget for this was only $15 million (which is low budget for a hollywood movie) so it doesn't really have to aim high to make a profit.
The only thing that bothers me is Paul Johansson (of "One Tree Hill") is directing. He has never directed a movie before, just a few episodes of the above show. And he cast himself as John Galt.
I don't think he is a good actor and it's yet to be seen if he's a good director yet. |

Especially if you're doing it to make money.

Crew are whores.
Actors are liars.
With a few notable exceptions "art" and the "film industry" are completely unaware of each other either through ignorance, design or most probably in this case over ambition. |

I personally love Atlas Shrugged as a book and struggle to see how they can turn it into a movie without closing their eyes, pulling out random pages and then turning the remainder into a film.
