Hey everyone!

Looks like my Dell Dimension 2400 is taking a dump.

I may need to replace the hard drive. That's not the problem.

I don't have XP recovery disks from Dell. I had a problem with them and I can't seem to get the recovery disks from them. Does anyone here have DELL XP Home edition recovery disks that I could borrow? I have a product key, but w/o disks..I have no way of re-installing windows on my computer.

I would simply borrow the disks and return them to you post-haste. Anyone willing to help? Your assistance would be very much appreciated!

If anyone has any suggestions...I would appreciate it!

Thanks fellow TB'ers!

Make sure you use magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder (do a google search) to change the product key if you both do this.

Peterbright, I do not recommend this. Dell product keys are hard coded into the install, if he doesn't change it, it could de-activate your copy after updates.

Call Dell, they will send you replacement discs for under 20 bucks.

This is the correct answer. I don't know about the de-activation bit (I've never heard of that before) but that doesn't mean it won't happen.

In any case, the $20 is worth the peace of mind and ensuring the legality of your OS.

I don't need to use it again as that system has bit the dust.

Is that so? I didn't know this!

I will try to get the recovery disks from Dell. If I still can't get them...any other recommendations???

Thanks!

But the drivers and everything are hard coded. If it wasn't a 2400 you had, chances are he will boot to either STOP errors or have a bunch of drivers he doesn't need trying to load up.

Thanks!

You can get them as long as you have your Dell system ID on the PC somewhere. White squarish sticker with a barcode and a 8GD7TP type of number.
