When is it appropriate? Early on to stop them being a laughing stock at school or having it broken to them painfully by the school bully, who only ever got a drunken dad rowing with his mother for Christmas? Or do you try to keep the magic alive for just one more year, swearing that when they reach the age of majority you'll tell them everything?
Please, weigh in with your thoughts.

I'm not a parent, but I don't believe I was ever told. I believed it a little less every year until for a while I was basically in denial and I knew it, then I just accepted it on my own.

It was just a subtle shift from believing to playing along because the spirit of Santa is fun. Before I had kids, miraculously, everyone still received gifts from Santa. I've never had a conversation with my 15 and 12-year-olds because it was never necessary. |

My 10 year-old son and I never had the conversation, he just kind of figured it out at some point; though he's never told us, presumably as not to hurt our feelings.

Anyway, we should close this thread. Username might be heart broken. |

I think it's easier now, I can ask for specific things, make sure I get what I really want if it's within reason.

Leaves a little wonder in it for both the parents and the kids. But at this point it's pretty much a commercialized crock, so maybe it doesn't matter any more. |
