I really have mixed emotions about this because I would MUCH rather have Tuberville back but I want to remain optimistic about changes.
People are going to talk trash for the next year because of Chizik's record @ Iowa State but that has no effect on how he'll do at Auburn. I still have faith in Auburn.

Why don't you say anything to fo shizzle or mj5150 when they refer to Alabama fans as 'honks'. Is that classy? I know they don't mean anything by it on here, some people use 'honk' as redneck, or dumbass, or whatever derogatory meaning they choose, but where I come from... honk is short for honkee - which means "yo white boy you a fishbelly cracka!"

I got the term from my local sports radio guy who does a weekly "Huskie Honk" show which is a former UW player, asst coach, and the host who is a huge fan. He said they were always "honking" the horn for UW, so they shortened themselves to "honks". But if anyone took my use of that word as derogatory, I am sincerely sorry.
It seems like our NCAA threads have a vocal Bama and vocal Gator contingent. There are other teams represented here, but not a group like us and Bama have. Heck, I would consider me, Greg, Barker, and Visirale as Gator Honks.

Only two years as a head coach and going 5-19 is pretty frightening, and MIGHT indicate that he doesn't know how to put together a staff to get the job done. Looking at the teams he had to play while a HC, he had some pretty poor competition and still managed a 10 game losing streak. Undoubtedly he'll have access to more talent and funds to do better at Auburn, but I'd still be very worried. Auburn's thing has always been that they will only hire someone who have previously been a head coach, but this hire doesn't make much sense IMHO. They hired a guy who has a horrible HC record, so I'm not sure their HC-only standard really means much in this case. They may have just hired their own Shula, or he could be the next big-time SEC coach. Who knows?
What interests me more is the way the hunt was handled. Jay Jacobs didn't conduct things very well at all. I'm also interested in the full story on why they didn't get Turner Gill and if it was really related to his marital status. He's the guy most Auburn fans really wanted it seems, and for good reason. If money was no object, it seems they could have done better than Chizik, at least from the standpoint of hiring someone with a successful HC career.
On the plus side, he knows Auburn, as well as the recruiting trail here, so hopefully he can get caught up quickly. The bad thing is that, while his strong suit is defense and defensive recruiting, he's got huge competition from Saban who is considered to be the best in the country at that. I would have thought Auburn would want to go after an offensive guy, and then bring someone in like Chizik to be DC instead of HC.
But we'll see how it all plays out. Having a relatively good recruiting ability is more than enough if you are able to develop your players once they arrive. That's how Auburn had success under Tuberville with Chizik, Muschamp and Borges. If they can put together a good coaching staff then anything is possible, but that is why Chizik is such a scary choice. Who knows?

ISU is North division. Nobody confuses the North with the South division. And ISU didn't play TX, OU, or Tech this year.
Man, I hope this turns out better than it's looking right now. I DO NOT like it when teams that are supposed to be good aren't. I read an article today talking about a semi-unruly mob at the airport to greet the AD when they got back from hiring the guy.
I still can't believe that Gary Patterson from TCU hasn't been scooped up by one of these SEC schools (I'm knocking on wood as we speak). His style would translate perfectly to this league. Offensively, he's all about running the ball, a ball control passing game, and taking a shot a couple of times a game. His defenses are Top 5 in the country consistently and they attack, attack, attack QB's.
I just hope everybody stays dumb about this guy.........Go Frogs! |

I heard Chizik has the blessing of Pat Dye. That really worries me. I call it the "spawn of The Bear" disease. Alabama spent several years in the wilderness hiring guys that came from the Bear's family tree. That is a really dangerous thing. When you're looking for a new coach you should certainly think about how they fit the culture of your program, but beyond that, you need to get the best guy. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
