August Trip to NYC

Sign in to disble this ad
OK guys, my wife and I are taking our first extended vacation while our son stays with the in-laws in Virginia. She is flying there with him for a few days then we meet up in NYC. I arrive on a Friday night and she gets there the next morning. We leave Wed.

We have not booked a hotel but will stay in midtown manhattan.

Obviously I'll be visiting Sadowsky! We plan on catching a Broadway play, Natural History Museum, Times Square, etc.

Any other suggestions for a musician/music lover? I am in by myself late Friday night. Clubs I should check for live music in Mahnhattan? Let me know!

You'll have to narrow it down a bit. On any Friday night, you can find any type iof music you want.

The summer in NYC usually has a ton of amazing free shows and festivals, outside of Lincoln Center (Mingus Big Band, Sonny Rollins, etc), Charlie Parker Festival Tompkins Square. Best bet is to search the week you plan of going.

As far as Friday night, you can walk into a bunch of non-descript clubs and find cats so good, you'll want to quit on the spot. Just need to decide what type to find the section of town.

Ausf, thanks for the info. I know it is early for alot of venues to be fully booked. I am there August 6-11. I'm open to everything from Esperanza Spalding to Iron Maiden so to speak as far as styles and taste.

I figured I could wonder around and see tons of killer musicians without any problems. However, I know that what you'll see on Bourbon is so different than other parts of town in New Orleans. I would rather see some cool places and not end up in a tourist trap with a band playing "Brickhouse".

You know about the GTG just outside NYC on Aug 15, don't you?

The last time I was in New York, last October, I saw Hair. That was a blast.

August 6th I'll be playing at the Crash Mansion on Bowery with the funk band Heylady.

Just pick up any of the free papers when you're in town. The best shows are listed. You'll want to stay away from the big venues and hit the small clubs. You haven't seen Maiden, Anthrax or Suicidal Tendencies until you catch them in a 300 max club. Then you walk a coupla blocks and sit next to Mingus' widow and listen to 20 of the best horns in you'll hear play her husband's music in a basement. After that, it's probably only 2 AM, so the NYC night has just started.

Hey guys, two quick things we are considering. We are debating on staying in the Times Square area or down in Soho. Our friends that used to live in New York suggested Soho, but our other friends that took a trip there said we have to stay in the Times Square area.

Thoughts on either?

I would choose SoHo. It's good to visit Times Square as a tourist but there's no point in staying there.

The Bowery's on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The northern end of the neighborhood is about 4th Street. It's the neighborhood where CBGB's (the famous punk club, RIP) was.

Not to rub it in, but that's a bummer you're missing the GTG.

Actually, right by SoHo, and it might actually be considered SoHo. It's on Bowery, south of Houston (which is where SoHo gets its name).

i hate username, you and I have crappy timing!!!

I'm definitely leaning Soho at this point for the hotel. I think it seems like the cooler place to walk out of your hotel, go to shops, eat, etc. We'll just cab or subway over to Times Square as needed.

Oh well, not GTG but at least I get to go to Sadowsky! Anyone visited the Warwick Custom Shop showroom? Any other suggestions music store wise? I know Manny's is no more and would have been a place to go just to say you've been there.

Thanks for everyone's feedback!
