Auto-installing VNC?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, I have a small problem. I took my LCD computer monitors to the recording studio to replace my guitard's noisy, ancient CRT monitors, and now I need to access my desktop from my laptop. I was in a hurry, and forgot to install a VNC program on my home box. I had my drives networked, but for some reason now they're not showing up, so I need to get into the interface on the desktop.

Anyone know of a VNC program I could burn to a disc and then have it auto-install on my box? I googled it and didn't come up with any answers.

Thanks in advance, my fellow TB techies.

Forgot to mention, the desktop is running XP Pro SP2, and the laptop is running Vista 64bit.

I used to use Dameware a lot at the last place I worked. It's a pretty nifty utility, it will force the client software to install on the remote computer provided that you have the proper credentials, username and password. It's basically a VNC program on steroids.

http://www.dameware.com/

But I'm pretty sure this isn't a free program, I was using a cracked version because the company I was working for was too cheap to buy it.

edit: Actually, it looks like you can use some parts of it for free.

Also, if you have your windows firewall enabled none of these remote tools will work. Most of the ports they use are blocked by default. Someone here might know a way around the firewall, but it's probably more trouble than it's worth.

God, what a can of worms. Nothing wants to work remotely with Vista, and I can't even ping my desktop. Something aint right, and without my desktop GUI, I'm lost lol. I think im going to be better off just bringing home one of the monitors to install VNC the old fashioned way. *sigh*

Thanks for the help though guys.

All of the above suggestions may work for you, but also keep in mind that Windows Xp comes with a built in remote desktop application, RDP. Trouble is, if it was never enabled on the remote computer, then you would have to enable it remotely check this link here:
http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/...ks_remote.html
Do you remember the name of the computer or the IP Address? On your laptop, click the Start button, click Run, type mstsc, and click OK. This will bring up the remote desktop application. type in either the remote PC name, or the IP address and click Connect. If you are unable to connect, either the remote PC is not on the network (you mentioned that you are not able to access the networked drives now), the XP firewall is blocking you from accessing the PC, ot RDP is not enabled.
