"Avatar" - the movie

Due to be released December.

I really can't decide whether this looks like being pretty cool or the most dreadful movie of the year. Whaddya think of the trailer?

It could be cool, but unfortunately my expectation is that it will be closer to the "most dreadful movie of the year" end of the spectrum. We'll see, I guess. I hope I'm proven wrong.

From a purely animation/graphics standpoint, this looks stunning. The story who knows...

I will see this in a theater (or would "theatre" be more correct, Bill? ), just for the visual aspect. I will hope for the actual story to be up to snuff as well, but won't be overly disappointed if it doesn't measure up to the animation.

That would be "cinema".

And I agree - if the visuals are stunning enough and there's enough of them, I can probably live with a cornball storyline.

Looks like "Titanic" with aliens from the trailer.

Strikes me like a Pans Labyrinth type movie.. which was awesome, IMO.

Cameron's got a solid track record, so I think it'll be good.

BTW, it wasn't mentioned in this thread yet, but the movie is supposed to be in 3D. I think it'll be released in both 3D and 2D, depending on what theater you go to, but the intent is for it to be in 3D.

Looks like it's gonna be pretty good if you ask me. I work at a cinema, but I missed the trailer which was shown in 3D which premiered last night. Gutted!

Reminds me a bit of Lucas' recent Star Wars films in style though, if they were more 'personal' rather than 'sci-fi'.

If you mean Avatar, as in the Last Airbender, thats a different movie. There is a movie coming out called The Last Airbender, which is the Nickelodeon show, but this is a different thing.

Unless there was a different show I dont know of.

IMO, this may give D-9 a run for its money on the CG side of things.

I just hope there's an actual script. People love the Star Wars movies, but I hated them because there was zero thought given to the script. I don't mind special effects, but without a decent script to display them against, it's every bit as bad as great musicians who write bad songs.

Meh. I'm looking forward to 9, and beyond that Alice in Wonderland.

Gotta say I agree.

They better have the caterpillar in Alice though.

I had forgotten all about 9, until I saw a commercial for it today. Now I am pumped for it again. Alice in Wonderland is something that I am also eagerly waiting on.

Yeah, that's it. I saw a preview last time I took him to the movies.

D-9 looks interesting, and maybe 2012 for the CGI stuff (though I've no doubt the story will suck).

Alice in Wonderland is not something I'm looking forward to. I just can't see a lot of the very clever humour in the books coming over well in this type of movie.

The media over here have been going on about nothing else apart from this being the first "proper" 3D film!!

I think it's seen as rescuing the film/movie industry as this is something that cannot really be pirated...?

So - at the moment, most blockbusters lose a lot of money to pirated copies and free content on the web.

But if a big selling point is that it is a 3D spectacular - then there is no point in watching a cheap pirated copy ...

The question is whether this will be the kind of film that will bring people flocking back to see films in the cinema ...?

It looks like a movie of nothing but special effects. I saw the preview last week and it really told me nothing about the movie. Just some blue people and some great visuals. I see it being a really bad movie.
