Ok, so I was having a discussion with some friends today about the state of the automotive industry...not about bailouts, or US vs. Imports or anything, but about what models, made in the past, say, 15-20 years will actually endure in such a way that in another 10-20 years, people would actually consider restoring them as "classics"...
I contend that the era of really collectible, sought after examples ended in the mid eighties, going so far as to suggest that whether or not cars are "much better than they used to be" tech-wise has completely DILUTED what once gave cars their charm, and that what once was a proud industry is just one-upsmanship flying in the face of basic primal lust for the machine.
So I ask of you, TB folk who dig on cars, what would you consider examples of cars you truly honestly feel fit the bill?
I am not talking niche vehicles like retro stuff PT cruiser wannabe Ford Tbird nonsense. I'm also not talking about tongue in cheek resurgence like the love affair with old cavaliers with boy-racers with trust funds and the like...I'm talking REAL cars.
I say there are really none. certainly not Lexus, or Infiniti or any of the upper tier stuff like the plastic Caddy garbage. And the new Camaro Charger nonsense either. that is cheating.
What say you?

So....nope. Oh yeah, and I know you drive one. Take bias out of the equation.

I really like the mini...do you think it was cashing too much in on the retro craze, or do you think they made a cool old car that much better for its reimagining? I think the latter. Such a fun car. good call.
One of the ones on my list of contenders was the BMW M3. / 325 series from the mid-late 80's. CLASSIC lines, great motor, unreal chassis.

another on my list, obvious as it may be, is the Corvette.
One you might sneeze at is the Honda Element.

The T-Bird re-issue isn't collectible today, but wait 15 years.
There are a few specialized performance versions like the Lightning pickups that probably will be.

I was asking for examples of cars that for their design or whatever would bring out the real "oooh yeah I gotta restore that" type feeling out of a large group of people....much in the same way the Bel Air endured...the kind where someone, 40 years down the road, wouldn't blink an eye at dropping two grand on a piece of pristine trim to complete "that classic"...
Another on my list, obviously, is the Jeep Wrangler. Not so much the current version, but really...this car is an icon, and kinda transcends the future "what if"...it's classic already. And with that, I tip my hat to the Cherokee & GRAND Wagoneer. The most classic examples of the more recent "original" suv, before that term was even coined (of course the Bronco & Suburban preceded it, but they already have been restored in droves)....in a way the "grand Cherokee" will never be lusted after.

It was a pretty good success, it's built on the compact Kappa platform, which has shown some great promises (see Vauxhall VX). However, sales have stopped and those who want to keep theirs will start buying others for parts. In ten years from now the Solstice will probably be a rarity.
DeLorean had shown interest in restarting the now closed factory, in which case it might not become rare, after all.

Another on my list was the Mazda Miata, which I consider today's MGB.
