While I see the situation they are trying to avoid, I think this course of action is only going to piss off the drunks who want to buy more alcohol and can't get it because the store closed early that day.
Its actually kind of sad that a business has to shut its doors early, on what would be a great day for selling alcohol, because some people can't contain themselves after a sporting event. Not very sportsmanlike at all.

I think they are trying to keep people from drinking in the streets. For game 5 I saw footage of seas of fans packing streets presumably to see jumbotron footage of the game outside of Rogers Arena or some plaza's in Downtown Vancouver. Tonight's game is in Boston and could be the deciding game if Vancouver wins, so it stands to reason that there could be a lot of public drunkenness as a result of tonight's game, people packing (possible overcrowding) bars and lot's of public celebrations.
Remember what happened when the Montreal Canadiens won a Quarterfinal Round in 2008?
They did the same thing during the later Canada olympic games, worked quite well. Prevented the already kinda-drunk from "re-stocking" then really going nuts.
With well over 100,000 people celebrating (or venting frustration) in the downtown core it is a good way to reduce the idiocy.
Could be why alcohol sales of any kind are not allowed on election day around here. When looking at the consistent (non)quality of our elected officials however, I don't see how things could be any worse if excess consumption was required prior to entering the booth.
