Bad news from the hospital...

Well, I thought I had a run-of-the-mill broken wrist, but apparently things are a bit more complicated than that. I just got back from the fracture clinic - turns out I have something called Kienbock's Disease. Never knew anything about it before! But a serious fall at work last week has aggravated the problem with the bones in my wrist and caused further damage.

That fits in exactly with what it says here. Notice the comment at the bottom:

If it's your personality, when people ask if you have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, you can always respond "I wish! That's a piece of cake compared to this."
http://darkerblue.kienbock.com/newdx.html

I can't say I'm overjoyed with this. But people get worse news at the hospital, I suppose.

Anyway, in a cast for another 3 weeks, possibly followed by physio and surgery.

Yippee!

Bill

Bummer, I guess a broken wrist means you won't be able to participate in those long, argumentative megathreads in the Lobby anymore.....oh wait....

That is definitely NOT good news. I hope that you develop ways to cope with this that allow you full creative and musical expression and freedom from pain.

Sounds to me like they're trying to blame the damage caused by the fall at work on a pre-existing condition that is your fault.

You might be getting screwed. I'd get a second opinion and a good lawyer.

That really sucks. I've been battling wrist issues since my mid 20's. A dirtbike wipeout a few years ago brought it back twice as bad. I can still fish and play bass. I just can't have anymore motorcycle crashes!

I went through surgery a year ago for a separated tendon in my elbow. Just stick to the plan laid out by your doc and therapist, and you can get through this.

If Bill Clements can play with one hand, and Django Reinhardt can make the music he could with fused fingers on his fretting hand, any of us can beat these things. Stay positive. Healing will take a long time, but that's OK. You will beat this. We are all pulling for you here!

That website is really negative; it seems genuine, but they seem to be trying to manage expectations downwards - what happend to the power of positive thinking!!??

I hope it's not as bad as it makes out anyway - all the best Bill!

That sorta stuff really isn't an issue in the UK. Chances are, given Bill's profession, he will have insurance that would cover it even if it was pre-existing. Even if he didn't, the NHS woudl take care fo the medical issues and I am pretty sure his workplace would take care of the rest (his profession has quite a decent union in the UK).

Thanks. Around here, it's a way of life. And one that it looks more and more like we're going to be stuck with for a long time.

Yes, it's the NHS I'm dealing with, and they have no stake in establishing who's at fault in any way. That's for other folks to decide.

Mark is also correct in his assumption that I'll let my union handle my interests in this.

Thanks for the goodwill message, guys, genuinely appreciated here.

Ah man that blows. Hang tough listen to your docs. For obvious reasons, I don't need to remind you why you don't want to mess with the functionality of your wrists.

You must be referring to my widely revered awesome slap bass playing, right?

i have wrist problems too, started by working at Gibson guitars...

accelerated by being in 2 bands, gigging 5+ a month, and 3 practices a week, and a bowling league...

i had carpal tunnel and tendonitis.... those were easy, but it also seems like i've lost some cartilage in my wrist. I have to pop it once or twice a week or it will ache real bad... Sometimes if I pick something up just the wrong way, it will shoot a splitting pain right up my arm...not fun. luckily it rarely happens anymore.

funny though, cause as soon as I quit Gibson, the problems stopped... but of course i was screwed up by then...
