Bagpipe Players?

Sign in to disble this ad
Do we have any here on TB?

I'm thinking about trying to teach myself how to play. I've always loved the sound and have been fascinated by them. However, I know absolutely nothing about them. I was thinking about buying some bagpipes at around $200 from: http://www.larkinthemorning.com.

What do you think? Should I shell out $200 and give it a shot? I figure it can't be TOO hard.

I hear it is one of the hardest wind instruments to play, no idea why. My neighbor/teacher at the high school that I went to plays, gets really annoying when he practices in his back yard, but was cool with he played at official events at school, like when we had politicians come and speak and what not.

Hmmmm, that's not good, considering I have never played a wind instrument before, only stringed.

Maybe if you stop squeezing it, it will stop screaming.

I love the sound of them. After watching many people play them up close, it's something I'd rather just listen to.

I've tried them. They're not easy. And they're loud.

Don't worry about not having played a wind instrument before... they're unlike any other instrument you blow into. You're just blowing into it to keep the bag inflated, the actual work is done by exerting pressure on the bag by your arm.

Played well, they're impressive... But you will sound like an asthmatic wildcat being run over by a truck. For at least the first few years.

Play the tuba. It's like a bass. It's also runs on hot air.

You don't need a set of bagpipes to get started - you just need the chanter (the part you blow into and finger the notes on) and some instructional materials. I have that much at home - haven't gotten around to messing with it. But lessons will certainly be needed early on...

There are two churchs within 50 metres of my house, and the local pipe band always warms up on the street, practically directly outside my window, when they play.

You can get sick of the pipes quite quickly

Still think they are cool, as long as used in the right situation.

Random note: One of the locals at the pub i used to work at was the queen mothers bag pipe player

they're a ***** to play if your lungs haven't reached their full size. other than that, if you can play one of those plastic 'flutes' kids have at school nowadays, you can learn to play the bagpipes pretty easily (if you can keep it inflated).

and yes, your neighbors will hear everything.
