Am I the only one that is strangely attracted to this mysterious instrument? Is it the shape? It looks like a wheel cover with a broom stick attached to it. Is it the sound? Tunes that feature it tend to sound like someone in the band is high. Is it the folks that usually play them? I don't know.

I like banjos as well. They are weird. While they are usually lots of fun, sometimes they can express very blue feelings.
In turkish music we have a very similar fretless instrument, which is basically an oud in banjo clothing.
Its implementation is direct contrast to the typical usage of banjos though.

They were originally fretless, and a good amount of old-time players will play fretless banjos. The old-time stuff is wonderful, it isn't very bright cheery music often times.
