Okay, on the 15th of March I have an important fitness test coming up. It involves a running bleep test (based on speed, not distance) and a strength test.

I'm in physically good shape, well equipped to take the test. However, I want to push myself the extra mile and really blow away the standards of what are asked of me. To meet this demand, I will be hitting the gym for some serious cardio training (working at a higher pace than my usual gym routine involves) as well as running home from work when I can (probably 3 nights a week at 3 1/2 miles). I will also begin to adhere to a diet of steamed green vegetables for dinner with fish and pasta and chicken for dinner to ensure that my muscles will be loaded with energy when the test comes. However, this diet can be modified at the forums advice.

Tonight when I got home, I had received notice that the fitness test I was due to take was coming up. On the way home, I had asked Hermes to guide me in my journey. As I neared my home, I had a vision of myself musclebound like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 80's. I now realise this is a vision from Hermes sent to guide me on my path.

TB'ers, please feel free to provide me with the following.

*diet for loading my muscles with stores of energy

*exercise (anything new I should try at the gym?)

* inspiring pieces of music (Chariots of Fire and Eye of the Tiger are driving me now)

*inspiring quotes

I plan to live a life of extreme focus and discipline to smash the test to pieces. Brothers, give me strength on my journey!

Having seen many of the people who have passed this test before you, I think you'll be right with a steady diet of kebabs and chips with curry sauce.

Well, I believe that would point you toward plyometric exercises. Got to be careful about those though.

What worked for me was intervals. I'd go as fast as I could for 60 seconds or a measured distance. Then I take it easy and fast jog for two minutes or another slightly longer measured distance. I did four to five sets.

This. Intervals are the shiznit. Time them, or count lightposts. I prefer lightposts.

Hmm I shall look at some interval training. When I ran home today I was counting the lampposts that I ran past as a way of measuring my distance! For instance, on one road I run at there are 20 of them.

In the middle, they are much further apart, so to cover them in the same length of time you need to up the pace. Which makes the middle section a real punisher!

another plus one on interval training.. you want to work out your max HR

as well, google "burpees with a pushup" that'll get you in shape (checkout rossboxing.com on them.. there's also a link on bodybuilding.com) as well as running bleachers at a local stadium (use interval training here)..

get an interval timer, too.. i have them on my iphone and ipod touch, you can download one at speedbag.com or something like that, they should be free, don't pay for one.

also, a quote that i use (which applies to just about any sport or workout in which you want some serious gains):

"Boxing isn't about fighting the other person, it's about fighting yourself"

Gah. I hate Burpies. I start @ a set of 10, then a set of 9, then 8... all the way to 1, then I go back up to 10... I wanna throw up at the end.

add a pushup to those burpies, too!

when i'm training during my regular workout, i do from 2 to 6 rounds of burpies (with pushups), when we train as a team, it's gets scary. lol
